Some in here are still under the believe we took the wrong player that draft and Leftwich should have been the pick. I'm not a big fan of him however.

Newman will likely be an All-Pro this season and is, to some, the best pure covercorner in football

Leftwich isnt even the most gifted QB on his own team

It isnt even close

yea teams can try to spread us or they can attack our middle linebackers zone pass defense using rb's out of the backfield and tight ends. the corners are awfully tough to run at but the middle may be soft i would pound and pound and pound up the middle with alot of intermediate passes in the middle linebacker zones.

The way to attack the Dallas Defence is, to force either Ware or Ellis into pass coverge and force Dallas to uses the nickel package the majority of the time. Therefore, idenfitying Dallas pass rushers.

They just won't switch to Nickly that often rather, they will drop into a two deep, corners in man to ma,n and all linebackers dropping into intermediate routes and bring 3-5 guys on the blitz.

Hence the beauty of the 3-4 zone coverage, blitz to get pressure before the zone breaks down.

Now against a team with good recievers like the cardinals or the panthers we could bring in aaron glenn and bring out roy take out davis and bring in pat watkins.

Newman in man, henry in man, glenn in man, watkins deep zone and linebackers in intermediate zone or man to man lock up the backfield.

I would attack the Dallas defense straight up the middle in the running game, and with screens.

Pass-wise, I would attack the deep middle of the field when I'm in a 3 WR set. I would run a 3 WR set 90% of the time. I would short pass the hell out of us.

I definitely go after Ellis first. Spread it out and make him cover on first down.

Did BP's Giants with LT, Carson et all---a very tough defensive unit sit back in a 2 deep zone to keep matchups in their favor? Or did the Giants move to that D later?

Could see BP using that as a changeup to keep and dictate to offense to some degree....but with our D backs Man is very tempting, except for getting a rb isolated on the wrong LB........that never seemed to happen to LT or Carson back then, but again Lt would just get to QB so fast that it would blow up a long developing pattern

How would I attack the Cowboys D? Run, run and run against them. Make the Cowboys front 7 prove they can consistently stop the run. Force Roy into the box. Then take your shots deep.

u can beat Henry deep and u can beat Ellis consistantly! u can run on this team if your center can handle Fergie witout too much help! Bootlegs and option rolls to Ellis side all day...

as far as the Jags r concerned they have a TE that plays like a WR... this is the mismatch.... bringing in 3rd or 4th WRs so that the Boys go to nickle defeats the purpsoe of trying to get a mismatch, right?

i doubt people wanna bootleg to Ellis because 85 percent of the time by the time the qb gets three yards deep ellis will be 4 yards deep in a speed rush.

Test the NT against any 34 is the first rule in the book on how to defeat the scheme. I anticipate this happening. I believe it is very important to consitatnly run against our team, regardless of early success or not. The goal will be to wear Ferguson down. Our second unit guys at the position are young and thus far unproven. You want to get to that second level. You want to wear Ferguson out as he is long in the tooth. I don't think you run wide on us much because that plays to the strength of our defense. Ellis has always been very good against the run and Ware has the speed to chase anything down. However, I do think you use backs and TEs/HBacks to run underneith routes. The idea is to make our LBs cover. If there covering, then they can't blitz. If we blitz against success in the passing game, then you should be able to effectively run against us. The idea is to make Ware indentify quickly and basically test Ellis on the other side. Ware has the natural ability to cover but he is still a young guy. He hasn't seen everything yet. Force him into quick decisions and hope you catch him slow to recongnize or possibly make the wrong decision. Ellis is simply a matter of forcing him into something he likely will not do well, cover. He is a miss match in other teams eyes. If you can force us to cheat safeties to cover, then again, it creates room and the TE becomes a vertical threat. Opens up the field that much more. Depending on who wins the FS job, I do think teams will test us deep but our secondary is pretty good. I would expect most teams to try and work us short. Influence Roy and try to isolate him. As a team, we wont to try and stay away from substitution packages as much as possible. Only in obviouse offensive situations do I believe we want to move away from our base defense. The more you can force teams to change defensive packages, the more problems it creates, the more complex defense becomes. I expect us to substitute personel a lot but not to go very far away from our base scheme. If teams force us to do this on a consistant basis, that's bad news.

I think this is what most teams will try on us, at least initially. I don't expect that many teams will have a great deal of success against our defense but we will see. Injuries always play a part and the one piece I don't believe we can afford to lose is NT. If Ferguson has a good year, we are going to be very formidable on the defensive side of the ball. If not, it could get a little bit chippy. I expect us to have a very good year defensively.

I noticed in the Parcells PC that he talked about strategies opponents might use against the cowboys defense. My assumption is that he is talking about teams lining up in 3 or 4 wide-receiver sets and forcing the cowboys into the nickel or dime package. Therefore, Looking ahead to Jacksonville, do you think that the Jags will implore a spread-offense approach (Perhaps lining Matt Jones out wide as the 3rd/4th receiver??) or do you think they will stay in a more run-oriented formation and take their chances?

My vote says they will test the run-defense early to see if its for real.

Thoughts??

IIRC, Jacksonville runs a pretty typical offense with either 2 RB's, 2 WR's and 1 TE set or the 3 WR's, 1 TE, 1 RB set as their 2 main formations.

If teams are spreading out their offenses, that's not all a bad thing. It makes it easier for us to predict what they are going to try and do and if we can stop the spread offenses somewhat efficiently, we'll be much more likely to get sacks since they'll have less people available for pass protection.

This is where the Cowboys are going to have to trick teams. When they expect Ellis to Cover, sometimes you can slip into a zone where Newman and Henry passes it off to the Safeties, but you will have to disguise it, and if it works, they will attempt a quick out from a strong blitz to Ellis' side, and it will be picked off and taken to the house.

all teams attack 3-4 Ds by trying to spread them out, that's why New England went to the 4-3 for much of the game vs. the Eagles

try to spread the OLBs out wide instead of them being in the backfield, and also try to spread them out, and get big gains up the middle, we'll see how Dallas responds, but w/ our size and speed on D, I wouldn't worry too much
