Spurs Trade for Kurt Thomas

The San Antonio Spurs have reached agreement with the SuperSonics that will bring them center Kurt Thomas in exchange for guard Brent Barry, center Francisco Elson and a 2009 first-round draft pick, league sources said Wednesday.

The teams are in the process of finalizing the deal with league officials.

By acquiring Thomas, the Spurs get some needed size to help them counter Phoenix’s Shaquille O’Neal and Houston’s Yao Ming. They also are expected to drop under the luxury-tax threshold, possibly saving them about $2 million. In exchange, San Antonio will send the Sonics a portion of the savings.

While Barry has been sidelined with a calf injury, Ime Udoka has taken his place in the rotation and proven to be a dependable contributor with his defense and 3-point shooting. Elson’s inconsistency limited his role with the Spurs this season.

The Sonics, who also considered an offer from the Orlando Magic for Thomas, have now generated three first-round draft picks from Rashard Lewis’ sign-and-trade deal last summer.

yup, the spurs were also in talks to trade for artest, but it was said that the kings were probably just talking to the spurs to make the nuggets up their offer. as for this move, i like it a lot, i just wish we didnt have to give the pick, but oh well, it should be worth it. Also, word is that they are gonna buy out barry and he can then resign with the spurs in 30 days, of course barry has a brain and wont go harping about it to half the world.

I good big man who plays great defense teamed up with Duncan. Duncan has been playing with scrubs beside him in the paint since DRob retired.

ya, how is it not a great move? we traded a hurt wingman and a player who only played the role of the victory cigar for a dependable big man that plays good D and can rebound and hit the midrange jump shot!

I LOVE this move!

Elson was a big disappointment... played very small and rarely showed his vaunted "athleticism." And I've never understood the Barry love from Spurs fans.

I could never understand why we had Barry inbounds the ball in crucial situations... he frequently made baffling decisions in those cases. Plus he was way too streaky from beyond the arc, and was weak defensively. Other than that though, he's great.

Thomas is a solid upgrade over Elson and Barry was just eating up minutes that could have gone to Manu or Fin. Great trade.
