The Cowboys expect La’el Collins to return for the playoff run, strengthening the depth of their already dominant offensive line.“He’s worked very hard to come back,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Monday. “We’re going to give him every chance to do that. Whether he’ll be available to practice this week, I don’t know that right now. He’s working with our strength and conditioning coaches. He’s working with our trainers and our rehab guys really each and every day. We’ll see how he does over the course of this week. We’re certainly hopeful at some point he’ll be able to come back this season. We’ll just take his situation day by day.”

Collins, the second-year veteran, injured his right big toe in the first quarter of the Week 3 victory over the Bears. An MRI revealed a ligament tear, and after consultation with specialist Dr. Robert Anderson, Collins underwent surgery Oct. 4.

The Cowboys placed Collins on injured reserve Oct. 5. Having missed the required eight weeks, he is eligible to return to the active roster as Dallas has not played its one designated-to-return card yet.

Collins said last week that rehab was going well and that he expected to be an option for the divisional round playoff game on Jan. 15.

“I’ve just got to make sure I can plant my foot to take on that bull rush,” Collins said. “That’s the only thing I need to make sure I can do. But, yeah, I should be ready [for the playoffs].”

It'll be interesting to see what we do with him if he's able to go. I don't think he'll replace any of the starters, but we could use the jumbo package a lot since it's use has increased anyway since we lost Swaim to injury and Escobar proved inconsistent as a blocker.

Collins is athletic enough that we might could even put in a pass play for him as a tight end/fullback.

Great news!!!! I would love to see him eventually replace Doug Free at RT. I believe Free should be let go in the offseason with Collins stepping in. I know they're saying he can't play tackle in the NFL, but to my knowledge they've never even given him a try at RT. I personally think he would be a serious upgrade over Doug Free. We should also keep Ron Leary. Next season our line would look like this....

RT= La'el Collins
RG= Zack Martin
C= Travis Frederick
LG= Ron Leary
LT= Tyron Smith

Really interesting thought-- jumbo package would be NASTY on the edges for sure.

Tyron AND Collins pulling?! Not fair lol...

The fact that he hasn't played a snap of rt in two years let alone coming off ir and that this ol is playing well when all starters are in there makes me confident he won't replace any starters. You can't make that move starting the playoffs experimenting imo. The jumbo package is the perfect place to put him in place of looney/Escobar. Depending on the defense we face I'd pull a play from bellichek and run smash mouth jumbo all game with Collins added in to this ol.

They did try him at right tackle last year to start OTA's and training camp. Garrett even said they wanted him to acclimate quickly so he will start at right tackle. He was there for a few weeks if I remember correctly, the team felt it wouldn't work for whatever reason and moved him to guard. I believe he probably could play RT, and would love to see him there. However, the Cowboys at this point do not believe he can in the NFL...

""We see him as a guy who can maybe do both of those things as he goes," coach Jason Garrett said. "The big thing for him is to try to get him acclimated as quickly as he can. So right now he's going to play right tackle for us."
