Stephen: I don't see us moving up in the draft but we could move down

Yes I will wait and see if our 4th round trade darlings Lance and Mingo work out.
Mingo has yet to play with a decent qb. You act like you know something about 4th round draft picks. Is Kyle Williams better than Mingo?

Nothing like giving away your game plan.
Actually, it's very smart in this case.

You should not publicly announce you plan to try to move up in the draft, but if you are open to moving down, it makes perfect sense to announce it publicly.

One reason to do it of course is to simply let other teams know they have a potential trading partner should the player they want be available at pick #12.

Another reason, and the one that is quite smart, is that it makes all teams below them worry because all teams now know there is a pick available at #12 if a player they want is still available then.

Meaning, it may cause teams, especially those right after #12, to trade up just to make sure no other team snipes the player they want.

Even if no other team would end up doing it, the risk is there and that might drive teams to move up a few spots just in case giving the Cowboys one or two extra picks.

Good to hear. The front office needs to trade down in the 1st round (preferably twice) and pick up extra Day 2 picks.
Problem is EVERY team after 2, outside of Chicago wants to bail. Good luck trading once and damn near impossible twice

Exactly right, @Reality ! Well explained.

Time will tell. They still need to try to trade down twice. Lots of very good players will be available between picks #12 - #25. This makes it possible the Cowboys could trade down twice in the 1st round and pick up extra Day 2 picks.

If we are moving down from the 1st and it is more than a couple spots the least we should pick up is a 3rd. If only a couple spots should be a late 3rd or high 4th.

Biggest thing is we need someone there that someone behind us just has to have. That usually is a QB, OT or pass rusher. In this group maybe Jeanty or Tet if they were there at 12.

We need to be aggressive, take whatever trades we can get even if it means trading several times, get as many picks as we can

What I do know is not to trust Jerry's judgement in these situations, especially when he goes around the process. What I do know is in both the Lance and Mingo situations their former teams gave up a lot to get these 2 players and in less then 2 years they wanted to be done with them. Trading them for a fraction of what they paid for them (and now to your point neither have show anything on game day or apparently to their former teams in camp or practice.

On top of that the Cowboys are looking to draft a WR #2 early in the draft, so it seems they have already determined that is not Mingo.

"At the time of trade, Lance had just been demoted to third-string backup, two years after being the third overall pick that the 49ers had traded three first-round picks"

"Mingo was an early second-round pick of the Panthers in 2023 that the Cowboys had high on their draft board. In roughly a season and a half, he played in 24 games with 19 starts. Out of 111 targets, he caught 55 passes for 539 yards and failed to score a touchdown. Only 19 of his catches resulted in a first down. In eight games with the Cowboys last year, he started once and finished with five receptions for 46 yards, no touchdowns, and two first downs on 16 targets."

Some QB hungry team is going to trade up. Stephen is just chumming the waters..
