- Last year is largely on Jason Garrett and the coaches. And of course, Jerry and I, too. Cincinnati won some key games with McCarron, and they would have one a playoff game with him without some key penalties. Weeden won games after he left. Cassel has won games. We need to do a better job as a staff and as an organization because we have enough talent.
Stephen has alot to prove when it comes to evaluating talent, or shall I say, alot to learn. Some say that he has been given more control from pops, but nobody really knows that for sure.
The one thing I can say is that I am glad that they have adopted the policy of not signing any so-called "big time" free agents to any astronomical deal that they have no chance of living up to. I don't hate Brandon Carr the player, but he is mediocre at best. I'm hoping that that will be the last mistake in free agency this team makes.
Ultimately, until we start hitting on players drafted from rounds 3-7, hell even some 2nd rounders, we'll keep getting the same results.
i think Stephen is more in charge than Jerry.
i think Stephen is more in charge than Jerry, hence Jerry getting overruled in drafting Manziel, and lately when Jerry said he could've sweetened the pot for Lynch. I think Stephen is coming around, he too was a work in progress.
If ever there's a forum for an owner/GM to come clean with the honest truth, warts and all about the team and it's deficiencies, it's a sales driven conference call with one of the team's main discretionary revenue generators.
"Hey all you season ticket holders! We haven't competed for a Super Bowl in 20 years and the way things stand it won't be any different this fall!";;
I think the script was:
1. Deflect any blame on those people that can be replaced.
2. Sing praises of draft class, implying that you got 2 out of the top 3 prospects. Hope for the feel good glee from last year's "3 first rounders" mantra.
3. Convince everyone that you have outsmarted the rest of the league on this free agency scam. Hope there isn't an open line from a caller from the Denver area.
4. Hype up some unseen reserves and scrubs from last year's draft just in case anyone remembers the "3 first rounders" propaganda being just that.
5. Slide in some "insider knowledge" about future rules changes so callers feel like they've dialed a pay-per-minute gambling line and now have the early scoop.
6. Finally, when in doubt, Sell! Sell! Sell! If the tractor pulls, Final Fours, and boy band concerts aren't enough, just wait until we bring Roger Goodell in here for you to boo as he announces the nest gas mask bong smoking draft pick. We'll take your deposit for tickets now.
Him being "harsh" of "direct" or "critical"....is fine and good. But what does it really mean? The people that are responsible for putting this together...they have unprecedented job security. The value of the franchise keeps going up.....higher than anybody else. And the results, year after year after year after year after year.....remain the same. And of course I do not expect Super Bowls or playoffs every year...but nothing they say means anything until the ACKNOWLEDGE through ACTION...that what they have been doing is NOT working. So to me, this is just an exercise to keep the masses in a state of hypnosis.
Thanks for the recap @erod.
I agree. I think kickoffs need to go the way of the dodo. I think punts should too. Off the top of my head, give them 40 yards or if that reaches into the end zone, then the 10 yard line.
He was that harsh, if not harsher. Basically called it a waste of money and a bad decision.
You guys are letting the media affect ur viewpoints and opinions. I love both Kickoffs And Punts!!!! That is football. If you don't like it go watch baseball, basketball, soccer, etc. Football is suppose to be tough and played by tough ppl. Heck let players that don't want to play go start a flag football league and all you softies can go watch that. Don't come to our game of real football and try to change it. If you don't like it leave. That applies to Roger Goodell and all those pacifists like Mckay , Fisher and the whole crapping bunch. Let Parcell , Hines Ward, Darren Woodson, Rod Woodson, Rodney Harrison, Jerome Bettis, Larry Allen, Erik Williams and those type of dudes run the Competition Committee!!!!!! Enough of this changing the game.!!! ENOUGH!!!
Damn, poor Carr. Don't know if it's the paraphrasing, but seems a harsh tone.
Good info on Green / Free battle. Putting Free on notice.
Every year, Stephen Jones does a one-hour call-in show for season-ticket holders with Brad Sham moderating. It's actually pretty insightful because Stephen obviously feels somewhat obligated to give his prime customers more than just canned answers. He even called out some guys.
Unfortunately, when he talked about Gregory and Lawrence, I was on another call. No details there.
Among the interesting takewaways (and please excuse the paraphrasing, but it makes for fewer words and an easier read for you):
- Free agency is not a place to get great players. We paid Brandon Carr like he was the best corner in the NFL, and he's just not. He hasn't made one pro bowl. Free agency forces you to pay good players like they're Hall of Famers, and they almost never turn out to be. We stay out of that trap now. And we got excellent value on Thornton and the other guys.
- We are incredibly excited about Chaz Green. Doug Free is going to have a hard time beating him out for that starting position. Chaz could be both a swing guard and a swing tackle for us. He's that athletic. We love that draft pick, and it's going to pay off for us.
- On talent alone, the three players in the draft we most liked were Jaylon Smith, Eziekiel Elliott, and Jalen Ramsey.
- The two undrafted guys to look out for are Andy Jones and Rodney Coe. We almost drafted both of them. Coe has had some issues, but Marinelli is the perfect coach for him. Jones is a very serious-minded kid who has tremendous quickness.
- The NFL is seriously considering getting rid of kickoffs altogether.
- Orlando Scandrick's rehab has gone very well. He hasn't lost any speed or quickness. That was fortunate.
- Will McClay did a tremendous amount of research on Benson Mayowa. That was his "find" in free agency. We feel very good about what he could become for us in time. Watch him closely.
- The only two players we're missing from the 2014 defense of note are Mincey and Selvie, and we think we have better players than them now with a lot more athleticism.
- We think Damien Wilson is going to be a really fine football player for us. Sean stayed healthy last year, so he didn't see much time, but he's got a chance to be a strong player for us.
- The Cowboys have placed their bid to host the NFL Draft, and we'd do it out at The Star, which has a 12,000 seat concert hall.
Fire away.
I expect kickoffs will be gone in 5 years. Just the way the game is moving

Interesting that he put last season on Garrett. That's a noticeable change from Jerry who typically would defend his coaches.
Gives me hope that if Garrett spits out another .500 or so season this year or worse, that a change could be a possibility.
