I think it's ridiculous that a professional team, with an owner that has billions of dollars in the bank and whose teams accounts for probably 60% of the entire leagues revenue, has to be handicapped by a salary cap.

The salary cap and revenue sharing has ruined NFL football. No longer are there any great teams. There's teams with great records. But not great teams. Now it's just who gets hot in the playoffs. And that's terrible. But hey congrats to the bengals, saints, patriots, and all the other teams that were god awful for 60 yrs and now laugh at Dallas because the leagues rules have tilted things in their favor

So ... Let him go. That's the problem with this team and organization, they sign to many players that have 1 career year to long term contracts. Draft better and this is not an issue.

I wouldn't be opposed to franchising him if we can manipulate the cap enough to create the room. It's the same logic applied to the Spencer decision. You get to retain your best defensive player from the previous year without handcuffing yourself long-term to an aging veteran. Best case scenario he duplicates his performance and you franchise him again. Worst case, he regresses and you let him walk after this year. This way we have an additional year to find his replacement.

Note to Stephen: giving big contracts to players on the wrong side of 30 is how you end up in a "tight" cap situation.

Well..

..if the Ratliff and Spencer situation hasn't taught the team about worst case scenarios with players..

..nothin ever will.

Hatcher is gone I think and we have to go youth moving forward.

And I'm ok with that.

I see our first 3 picks being defense this off season and DL and Lber are going to be the picks.

We desperately need more talent there with this 4-3 defense.

Spencer? they were 1-year Franchise tags...that was smart if anything..

Just imagine how dominating that defensive line could ve been had we not been determined to fit a square peg into round holes. The square peg would be inadequate linebackers into a 3-4 scheme when we had superior 4-3 dline talent.
A dline of Canty , hatcher, ratliff, ware wouldve been amongst the best in the league. With rotational players in Spears,Bowen ?

Does anyone in valley ranch get it?

If Richard Seymour can be let go after all those pro bowls and championships in his 30's so can Hatcher if a feesable contract cannot be reached.

I do respect the results generated and the way Hatcher has handled his current contract nonetheles

Yea you can't compare Spencer and Hatcher. Spencer was a Pro Bowler and everything pointed to them overpaying and signing him long term. They franchised him and he got hurt. It sucks for this year but in the long haul it was a great move. Now if they want ot retain Spencer his price will be about half the contract. A 1 or 2 year deal.

Not excusing Jerry and Stephen's handling of the cap, but if we have to pay a 32-year-old player a significant salary to remain with the team, then that's not smart either.

but if they do, you will be one of the first to defend it

Nope. The owner can't/won't fire the GM who happens to be the most clueless with the most power.

Employed family members responsible for multi-millions of dollars with zero accountability. That's some screwed up math right there.

Dallas is the new 'Untouchables'.

We would be stupid to pay a 32 yr old lineman top dollar. Let him test the market, someone will overpay

How many good years has Hatcher had here? Not many at all. Yes, you 100% let him walk. If we would have let other players walk in the past instead of kicking the can down the road, maybe we could have rebuilt this team like the 49'ers rebuilt theirs. Instead we are stuck we a medicore team with no signs of changing any time soon. It's tragic.

Spencer had ONE top year out of SIX. That was the arguement NOT to give him a big contract.

Hatcher has had ONE top year out of NINE. So going on past history and with the RECENT memory of the Rat fiasco, there is no way we give him a fat contract. However I could certainly see them trying to franchise him, that keeps him here for another year and also is a way to pay him for what he has done for the team.

There is no such thing as outplaying your contract...

Why not? People all over this forum are always clamoring that someone is overpaid or has a bad contract. As long as this is true, then the opposite is true as well. If someone wants to make the lame inconsistent argument that they signed the contract thats what they should play for, then the same is true with a "bad" contract.

It has ruined Jed and Jethrow because they haven't been able to adapt to the salary cap. When you have real football men in charge of football operations, you have a chance.

Please. I defend when I feel it appropriate, and I question when I feel it appropriate. Just because I don't criticize every move they make, doesn't mean I defend everything either. Neither does understanding why they did what they did. Still doesn't mean I agree with it, or would have done the same thing myself. For example, I understand why they've done all the recent restructuring, but that doesn't mean I agree with them doing it.

Ehhhh... that's not really what I was talking about. I'm saying the salary cap takes away any opportunity for any team to build a strong championship contending team. So what we are left with is a crap shoot every year. When's the last time the confetti fell after the Super Bowl and you said that's the absolute best team in the league this year?
