Are you surprised that the vast majority just use numbers in this new era? Many think just because they regurgitate some stats from some known stats guy off Twitter they’re smart.
No, because it's the simple way to do it. It takes less energy than actually looking at what really happened.
The trouble with the simple way is that football has a lot of complexities. A defensive lineman's role on one play might be to tangle up several blockers so another lineman can get free to pressure the passer, or the offense might have two or three players contributing to blocking one defensive linemen because of the design of the play or the danger of that lineman.
It's fun to me to study the subtleties of what happens on a given play, but most of us just watch the game "in the moment" and if the pass rusher didn't get to the quarterback, we say he didn't do anything. Or if a sack is given up, we blame it on the nearest offensive lineman. There are some things that are clear and easy to see, but there's a lot that calls for isolating on a matchup or player to understand whether he did his job and how well he did his job.
