Great interview and I agree with him on all counts.

The London games are the only real vision I'm seeing out of the NFL, but the reality is if they want any real NFL exposure, it'll require local teams. Once you get a local team out there, it'll probably take about 30-40 years for the sport to take hold.

Any time table for NFL expansion? What cities outside of San Antonio, LA, and London? It would seem they would need to add 8 teams for it to work out mathematically. Anyone have any idea or answers to these questions?

I don't think he's referring to expansion right now, but rather teams moving. At least I hope so. I think adding teams could really mess with the balance right now.

But to answer your question there doesn't need to be even numbers of teams. You flex it with bye weeks. That being said Goodell has said in the past that they wouldn't go to 33 but with 34 instead. Two divisions will have 1 extra team each.

That's really not fair to those divisions, though. That means they have to fight through more teams to get to the playoffs. If they are going to do it and they are taking the NFL to an international stage with the addition of London, why not get other countries involved? And rather than messing with the current division structure, they should simply add a division each to the NFC and the AFC. You could make them all outside countries, so we could have the AFC International and the NFC International.

That's the nature of the game.

They've packed over 80K+ per game for every one except a Bears/Bucs game in 2011 (76K).

That said there is probably a big difference between the novelty of going to one game a season vs. having a crappy franchise like the Jaguars there full time.

The attendance was just as good as an NFL game in the United States. By growing the sport internationally, not only do you get more fans, but you can get better players, which can in turn grow the sport as well.

Oakland has a storied past, but I wouldn't be surprised if they moved to LA.

St. Louis Rams are another team that might be primed to move overseas or to Vegas.

Buffalo Bills might be primed to move.

I think the first time that moves will start a trend if successful in London.

If the NFL puts a team in London, you'd almost certainly want to put them in the AFC East or NFC East.

You might end up putting the Dolphins in the AFC South and then this new team in the AFC East. This reduces the divisional travel time the best.

Ultimately you would want to see 4 teams in Europe.

England, Netherlands, Germany, and Spain.

I think you could also eventually see a team in Toronto or Montreal.

The best way to handle re-alignment in the scenario of adding two team is to eliminate divisions altogether. AFC and NFC. Every team plays every other team in their conference and the top six teams got to the playoffs.

This makes sense. You could have a division made up of just European teams and right there, you'd take care of a lot of travel issues since they'd play each other twice a year. I also think something else they'd have to do is each of those teams having a base of operations still in the United States. You wouldn't want to have to fly across the ocean to just get some treatment or to practice during the bye week when everyone on the team is from the US.

Will we have to rename the league? I hate this international stuff. I definitely don't want anymore teams. It's hard enough to find 32 Nfl caliber qbs. Ask Nascar how building tracks outside of the sports natural foot print, absurd ticket prices and going crazy with rule changes worked. I fear the League is going down that path. Hijacking one of eight home games from Nfl cities to promote a novelty is not at all fair to the fans of the "host" cities.
