Stephen Jones says pass rush more important than the secondary

I think they work more hand-in-hand these days. Look at scatter plots of pass plays today. It's very short pass routes and mostly concentrated out on the perimeter.

The time to get passes off is routinely at 1.8 seconds or less. So if your DB's can't at least hold up the WR's on those short passes or they can't tackle the ball carrier...your pass rush is rendered moot.

We actually had a better pass rush in 2015, but the defense was much better against the pass in 2016 because the secondary was better and wasn't getting killed on short pick plays, smoke screens, bubbles, etc.

And with teams like the Patriots and Packers, who smartly use the no huddle to gas the pass rushers when they are getting to Brady or Rodgers effectively, there's just numerous ways to deal with a good pass rush. If you have the DB's that can shut down those ways, then the pass rush can do its job.

You know, I don't like all this talk of exactly what we will pick in the first round. We have been successful with going BPA for a few years and now we are telegraphing what we want everywhere with this talk.

Since every team knows, I would trade up right before us and take this 'war daddy' if that's what they need. Sounds all wonderful right now, til draft and some team moves up and gets the guy we want right before our pick.

Can't do that at #28, this is just going too far.
I don't think it's a surprise to any team what our needs are. It's also not a surprise to us what other teams need. Besides, we may be looking more at DBs in round 1 and this could be a smokescreen. You never believe what's said leading into the draft.

True, but picking this late it should be BPA....in the top 10 its easier to see who is picked. Now it could be a smokescreen, but our needs are so obvious this year that we could be blocked from what we need this late by a run on DEs.

Noone saw us picking Martin or Fredrick for that matter. This year, its alot different.

In this era, unless you're lucky enough to have a truly dominating pass rush, secondary is just as important. If you can get a Broncos defense like a few years ago, or the Seahawks when they you should know that you're lucky.

There's a reason why an incredible defensive mind and the best team in the NFL value DB's so much. Almost every DB on the Pats was a 1-3 round pick. I don't know if there's a team in the league that's taken more DB's with "premium" picks lately.

You can have a great pass rush, but if your secondary sucks, you're not going to go very far.

We really need both. As far as producing a contending team, we really need about 20-30 more hurries, and need to cut down opponent pass rating differential pretty significantly. We're in the bottom 25% of the league. More hurries, turnovers will help that number significantly, but a lot of it will also just be better coverage.

Even the Seahawks' defense is really known best for the Legion of Boom. The Broncos had a great pass rush, mainly because of Von Miller, but also had a darn good secondary with TJ Ward, Aqib Talib and Chris Harris.

Yep, I meant that as more of a "since they have/had both". That is more luck than careful planning and shouldn't be expected as any kind of norm.
