Stephen Jones says pass rush more important than the secondary

Not sure I get this logic. You only have two DT's on the field at a time too, sometimes only 1 with the 3 DL packages Marinelli likes.

There's not a DE on the roster that can get speed rush consistently. Tapper runs a 4.5, but he doesn't look explosive off the edge.
The logic is we are lacking the most depth in the secondary. Between Lawrence, Irving, Tapper, Marinelli's hand picked project Mayowa, and I guess now Moore, you have to start getting something out of those guys.

yes, now go draft at least 2 preferably 3 DEs and dont worry about the backfield.
preferably watt, willis and rivers - and use whatever draft resources to get it done.
may be 1 of those will be able to contribute as a rookie.

Awesome. So then we'd have around 8 with the 5 already. (if TCrawford goes inside)

Adding a 4th round rookie coming off injury and a free agent bust to the mix doesn't do much to solve the pass rushing woes.

I agree that another body is needed at CB and S, but this is a really deep CB class. Makes more sense to get an edge rusher early, and pick up quality secondary players on day 2/3. Instead of half-*** investing into the D-line again.

2 stud DT's make everybody better, and create more turnovers. They can make a average defense look good all the way around.

In a recent article, S. Jones indicated that Cowboys #1 concern was pass rush. Getting turnovers was #1A

Pretty much obvious.
Yup. A great pass rush cures many ills behind it. I'm getting excited about this draft.

You know, I don't like all this talk of exactly what we will pick in the first round. We have been successful with going BPA for a few years and now we are telegraphing what we want everywhere with this talk.

Since every team knows, I would trade up right before us and take this 'war daddy' if that's what they need. Sounds all wonderful right now, til draft and some team moves up and gets the guy we want right before our pick.

Can't do that at #28, this is just going too far.

I know some secondary lovers are not pleased. Truth hurts.

Pass rush would have caused Dallas to beat Green Bay in the playoffs. It's more important than a secondary in my opinion.

If we just reach for the next best DE available we could end up with Ekuban, Pittman, Carver, etc.

It might be important, but we can't reach for what's not there.

The best plan would be to go DE at 28. Secondary is deep we can hit on the next few rounds on the secondary

I have no problems with that. I don't want our team to reach for a DE that is not talented.

However, the notion of fans that want us to draft mostly secondary players would be detrimental to our team.

Our pass rush was the problem last year.

I think if Dallas is looking at playing a bit more zone coverage then Jones is right about pass rush. I also think it is easier finding CB who are very good zone players as opposed to a shut down CB

Everyone wants a stud edge rusher. The question is at 28 is there going to be any passrusher better than what you can get in the secondary

Right, and at 28, is there a pass rusher that is already better as a rookie, than what is on the roster...now some on here will say yes, as that is their nature...and i can't disagree...but I think there will be a SS that can help more, for an immediate impact.

Then we should've tried harder in free agency. Expecting a #28 DE to come in and be a war daddy immediately is a bit too much to expect. Could always happen, its just the chances are low.

With them saying this though, I believe they might plan on moving up for a particular target. Its usually bad to draft this late with a particular need. Problem is we don't have enough picks to think about it, with too many needs.

It feels like some of the old drafts we did years ago where we came into the draft with desperate needs and came up short. We haven't done that lately, but it could happen again, we are locked into drafting certain positions. It could work out great, but BPA is much better than drafting for need any day of the week and twice on Sunday. We are setting ourselves up for failure.

If there is not a talented DE when we pick go into another route such as RT, WR, TE, or S.

I agree with the BPA approach.
