News: Stephen Jones Talks Franchise Tag, Bailey Deal, More

Spencer for the vet minimum only. He has already stole enough money from Jerry.

so true.....in that he has stolen enough money. This team is SO bloated and rotten from complacency and JJ's enabling it's sad. Spencer and MANY other vets need to be purged IMO. He's getting closer to returning the team to the shape it was in when he bough it in 1988. Unreal.

The thing is..

with Spencer..he has to now play a DE spot.

I don't think he's made for that anymore than Ware is.

B/w this..I'd just not resign him now..

I think you go ahead and draft a DT with our # 1 selection in the draft..

..then DE with our #2

and then a LBr #3..

and a safety #4..

and fix the freaking defense.

I'm hoping to see a jailbrake on defense next year with rookies predominantly.

He played that in college and I think it was Polian who said he thinks that was even better suited for him and would take advantage of being able to rush upfield. Of course they said that for Ware also, but... If he can stay healthy, I think we will be pleasantly surprised

it seems so long ago that Stephan was apple in our eye to lead this franchise for future. Now he is just a less delusional version of his padre.

Thanx for the additional info..didn't know Polian had said that..

he would know.

Anyway..Spencer if healthy and unlike Ratliff..

..not a cancer waiting to spread with his negative agendas..

..would be a breath of fresh air and a welcome addition.

I do not necessarily think it is truly complacency. I think it is simple fright. Once they actually find someone they think can play, they are intensely fearful of letting them go, primarily because they are not convinced they can easily replace them.

This is not a confident front office by any means. They would rather pay what they think they know, even if it is pushing the boundaries of value, rather than simply be confident they can replace via the draft. I suppose that sense of insecurity stems from an overall lack of identity.

I'd love to see Spencer back with an incentive laden deal. Very doubtful though.

i'm shocked they wouldn't consider the franchise tag for Hatch...seems like a perfect time to use it.

I hope they don't do that. Hatcher is getting older and actually was have trouble raising his arm above his shoulder at one point. We need some younger players.

This defense is not getting fixed in one year to compete for a Super Bowl, NFCE maybe, but not a super bowl. Take 2014 to start the process. Cut Ware, he's getting older and more injured, it's not going to get better. Use the draft to start the process, hopefully Crawford recovers and can be an added piece to the puzzle. Forget about Spencer, Hatcher and anyone else over 30.

Just say no to paying $10 mil a year to a player over 30. That money can get us 3-4 solid players.

Ask the C_hoks ... both their DT's combined cost the same as Spencer this year.

I didn't realize that. Those guys were like a brick wall against the run in the NFC championship game.

Surround grandpa Tony with talented youth. The draft is the key more than ever.

Executive vice president Stephen Jones said the cap issues will be similar to last year, but unlike last season he doesn’t anticipate the Cowboys using a franchise tag on a player.

“I don’t think the tag’s going to be in play for us this year,” Jones said. “Obviously, we worked it out where we could with Spencer. I just don’t see it where we need it this year.”

“Bailey’s restricted so he’s, for all practical purposes, not going anywhere,” Jones said. “But our goal is to get him signed to a long-term deal. We’re actually in pretty serious talks with him, so optimistic about that.”

Cuts & Restructures

Nothing’s been finalized yet regarding pay cuts, cuts and restructures for many of the Cowboys as the team looks for ways to get under the cap.

For the first time in like 10 years I am not worried about our Kicker. They better get a deal done!

It remains to be seen if he's less delusional than his father or not. As it stand now, it's not looking good.

I think you're right.

But, boy, would I love to admit I was wrong on that when the time comes.

Let them.

I agree...I would rather never see that fake fool again! 10.3 mil this season for sitting on his butt?

He had to have known that his knee was jacked, but he took advantage of Jerry and took the money and ran. Well, Jerry got sucked, so it's his fault as much as Spencer's. Good riddance is what I say.

I believe the only hope long term for this franchise is that Stephen sees the errors of his fathers ways and changes direction when he finally takes over. Hopefully he will look around the league and see teams that contend year after year, see what they are doing at the management level, and try to right the ship.

Stephen is not a dumb person. In fact I think he's quite intelligent. But he's influenced by a delusional egomaniac and has been his whole life. I'm not sure he will be able to overcome that.

Great post. At the very least, maybe there's hope that if he does slide into the GM gig when his father is gone, that he might be willing to change that situation after years of failure.

You would think there couldn't be two historically sized egos in one family, right?
