I took a closer look at that final Philly game last year and I noticed a couple of things about our third string QB.

The kid obviously is very gutsy. I liked the way he continually stood tall in the pocket under pressure. He also had a good feeling for the first down marker when ever he had to take off running.

The thing that worried me the most was his accuracy. He repeatedly through passes behind the reciever or had his passes sail on him.

Now this guy was known for his running skills in college due to the style of the offense he was in. I can't find too much on him now coming out of college. Did he have a reputation as an accurate passer?

I like the kid but purhaps bringing in a QB in the 5th or 6th rounds might be prudent for training camp if we have one this year.

No to drafting a QB. McGee is right on schedule.

I think a combination of first start jitters and terrible WR's made him a little antsy in that game.

Yeah I didn't think he played horribly, he's 3rd string for a reason and I love his progression.

You gotta look at Kaepernick if he slides to the 4th.

He was disappointing (as was the rest of the team) in that game, but I thought he did pretty well against the Cards when he had to go in. And he did well in that final preseason game when Miami played a lot of starters.

To answer your question, though, he played in a passing O in high school and threw for a ton of yards. But then when he got to A&M, he had to play in Fran's high schoolish option offense, and never really got to show off his arm. But in college he did show that he had tons of guts and leadership and plenty of athleticism.

thats why you bring Mitch Mustain in as UDFA

QB Mitch Mustain USC 6-3 #220 rd 5-6
Mitch Mustain began his career at Ark and had a successful freshman season compiling an impressive 8-0 record as a starter in 2006. Mustain has a strong arm, above-average accuracy and made good decisions with the ball this spring while pushing Sanchez for the starting job

Former USC quarterback Mark Sanchez: "He has a great arm. He can throw the ball through a brick wall.

Strong arm, as he's able to throw all the routes. Zip on his throws

I really do believe that if it were not for his arrest on suspicion of selling prescription narcotics in February, Mustain would have been drafted. However, it now looks like he’ll need to go the free agent route. But, the guy does have some tools that are worth taking a shot on. Mustain is a winner; he’s comfortable in a pro style system and displays very good accuracy/ball placement on all areas of the field. He won’t be a fit for every scheme as he lacks a great arm, but he strikes me as a guy who could handle an NFL offense early in his NFL career and earn a job as a number three initially.

BTW not bad for your #3 in 2011(and #2 in 2012)

Sure a guy getting his first real action wont always look pretty but 2 go ahead TD throws in his first few games is pretty impressive. Dont compare him to Romo, compare him to the other backup QB's

Not a future starter in this league.

Nothing wrong with being a solid backup though. If he develops into that then Dallas will be fortunate because backup QBs often play in this league.

Competition for McGee?

Heck, the great grid iron luminaries on this board are goose-stepping with Martellus Bennett on allowing Kitna to compete with Romo. So, I mean, why not have McGee compete for the top spot too?

Him and Rudy Carpenter.

Ware was a freakin' beast and took over that game for us. There's no way we win without Ware.

I can't believe how folks just want to hand McGee the 3rd string (or higher) job. We have two QBs who aren't going to play a ton in preseason so we obviously need another arm in to push McGee - not having to compete to be #3 is dumb.

How many said that about Romo his first couple seasons in the league? Hmmmm?

He brought the team back from behind in 3 different games last year; Miami in preseason, Arizona and Philly. It was a shame we lost that Arizona game. His throw to Austin was incredible.

You want us to bring on a possible drug dealer? Seriously?

We just need him as the future backup to Tony. I think he'll be fine as a clipboard holder or if he has to play a game.

Yes, they must draft a QB.

I like McGee, however, you always need competition. At every position. This will only make everyone better. But only draft a QB if he's the BPA at the time. No reaching for needs, just BPA.

however, with the past history they will pass on a talented QB, and pick another project TE, and HOPE to find a QB as a FA.

I've mentioned this before and it's amazing how many people will tell you that Romo showed something special from the beginning. That's simply not true. He looked like a deer in the headlights his first year, and while he had a few moments his 2nd year, he still didn't look like he had a chance to be more than a backup. It wasn't until his 3rd year that he really started looking like a potential starter. And remember, even though Romo was D-II, he still came out of a passing offense in college, which McGee did not.
