Stephen McGee

I would not be shocked if McGee is waived then brought to the PS. Unless his play jumps up over the next 2 games I think his best chance is the PS

McGee won't see the PS. Someone will snatch him up. He has all the physical tools and is quite intelligent. The possibilities of him developing into an absolute minimum stable backup are way to high.

If the Cowboys cut him, he won't be a Cowboy anymore.

Trade him even up for Vikes third stringer.
He ran for a touchdown last night.

I am in no way saying McGee is better than Romo,, that would be stupid. But here are the numbers thus far.

Romo 13 of 28 for 141 yards 1 TD and 1 INT.

McGee 18 of 35 for 162 yards 0 TD and 0 INT.

It may be that is worth the risk. At this point I don't think teams will be running after McGee I have seen some other 3rd string QB's looking much better than McGee. I hate to say it because I like him but there comes a point that he has to show something he has 2 more games I hope he can but if he continues to play as he has that will not cut it

McGee did have a nice pass down the field to Manny Johnson against SD. It was a pretty nice throw.

That said, I'm pretty ambivalent whether we cut him or keep him.

What third string QB with one year under his belt has looked better substantially better than McGee?

Show me where McGee has looked disgraceful? I think people are going overboard here. This kid has all the tools. His last season in college he got hosed by the offensive style they ran.

Give the guy some time. You can visibly see the improvement he has made from last year. The guy has the physical tools and is improving and some of you want to cut him. What happens if next year he just "gets it".

Sometimes it's better not to be quick to judge. I'm not saying this kid is going to be some great player, but I bet is 2-3 years down the road he will be a hell of a lot better than Jon Kitna. (Or Kellen Clemens)

I think we have some tough choices to make and I sure as hell would not cut a player at another position who is showing he deserves a spot on the roster because of McGee. If McGee can go out and start showing more then great I would love to keep him but if not then I would waive him and bring him to the practice squade and no I don't think he will be taken by another team if by chance someone were to take them well then good luck.

McGee has shown zero progress as far as what I see.

Example.

The guy is known as 'Check Down' McGee.

So on the one play where the Cowboys are nursing a 2 point lead late in the game and it's a 3rd and long he decides to take an 11 yard sack instead of doing what he always does and checking it down...

Just unload the ball into the turf in front of the RB who slid past the LOS!

The last thing you do there is give the opposing team another 11 yards so they are that much closer for the game winning FG.

:banghead:
You obviously never played quarterback. There is no way he could have thrown that ball. The OL collapsed around him so fast, had he thrown the ball you would have likely seen an INT.

Great question, because we all know that all 32 teams have a 2nd year player as their 3rd string QB. There should be e plethora of evidence.

Let's see who even qualifies.

  • Pat White, Dolphins
  • If the Patriots had a good backup Brian Hoyer would qualify, and has been better, but he is 2nd string as of now.
  • Tom Brandstater, Broncos, might qualify if they let let Quinn go as suspected.
  • If the Colts had a good backup Curtis Painter would qualify, and has been better, but he is 2nd string as of now.
  • Rhett Bomar, Giants, looked a lot better the other night against Pittsburgh's 1st team than McGee has against 2nd and 3rd stringers.
  • Nate Davis, 49ers
  • Keith Null, Rams, has looked better on a horrible team.
  • Chase Daniel, Saints
  • Rudy Carpenter, Buccaneers
I'll take Rhett Bomar for the win. Saddens me because I wanted that guy.

If we had no intention of giving whoever we drafted 2-3 training camps/preseasons, we shouldnt have drafted a guy to begin with.

That's it, my friend.

I think we all knew that McGee didn't exactly play in a college offense that would help prepare him for the NFL ... plus, he was hurt. This was going to be a project, but one worth taking on considering McGee's physical talent and his attitude and worth ethic.

He deserves at least another year. Earn your pay, Wade Wilson.

Could ? yes, would ? most probably not.

I can think of at least 4 teams out of the top of my head who would probably put a claim for him ( Jacksonville, Seattle, San Francisco, Washington )..
Not Jax (McCown looks great) or Seattle (backups set) ...maybe a few others though

You mean the same Rhett Bomar who went 13 of 26 passes (50%) for 167 yards and an INT with no TDs while playing the entire game against the Steelers? I don't know about you, but 167 passing yards for an entire game doesn't sound like a win to me. Especially with zero TDs, an INT, and a 50% completion precentage!

I find it hard to believe anyone would pick him up...I was all for keeping Matt Moore over Stanback a few years ago cause Matt showed a little something...enough to think the time and effort was worth it...has anyone truly seen or even heard a whisper of McGee showing something...

Against 1st stringers for the Steelers vs. 2nd and 3rd stringers that McGee has faced. Did the Giants Offense score? Uh, that would be a roger.

I call that looking better.

Let me ask you this. If you cut McGee do you think he would clear waivers?

No. The reason the Cowboys took him in the 4th round early, as I remember, was because another team would take him if Dallas didn't act fast.

Here's a question for everybody ........ have even the two veteran QB's on the team really shown much this preseaon? After all, if they can't show much with the "vanilla" offense we are running, how can we expect McGee to show much with a rag tag supporting cast?
