I don't get this comment at all. Every team in the NFL tries to retain their own free agents. Not just the Cowboys.

So is every other team an example of the clown show also?
I stopped watching all nfl games except the boys many years ago for reasons that can’t be mentioned on this board. Long story short, it’s what I call the dumbing down of the nfl. I have no interest in what other teams do. What exactly has our clown done right in FA for many years now? This is just another blanket statement made by the second clown in command about FA that means nothing.

He's telling you they want them back because they don't plan on changing anything in FA.

And guess what? For example, Golston is a JAG. Let him walk and try to find a better DT.
Exactly how I read it. Don’t expect anything in March or April folks. It will be the same old song and dance. They like their guys.

Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones when asked on @1053thefan about trying to re-sign soon-to-be free agents like DT Osa Odighizuwa, CB Jourdan Lewis, DE Chauncey Golston and RB Rico Dowdle:

“We want them back. They’ve shown that they are Dallas Cowboys football players. They’re certainly guys we want to have back, it’s just making all the calculus work when it comes to fitting everybody under the salary cap.”

yes we want them back. but if they want more than 2.5M per year, then sorry, we can't afford them (lying in progress)

Golston has played Edge all year and has had his best year . Letting them walk means you either draft that position or add a FA . And people get caught up on this term “ starting “ . Football is a game of depth & rotation taking plays off then going back in .

Would not mind seeing all four back as pieces and certainly in the draft DT Edge RB should all be added on rookie contracts .

Maybe a DB in FA since Diggs probably missing the season opener and Lewis is a nickel a valuable one at that . Saved the Tampa game with a great play . Even with these four Dallas needs more at each position .

I think we're not liable to bring back Lawrence, so Golston is the cheaper option there. He's a run-down end who can also move inside on passing downs as a relief player when we play Parsons and Kneeland/Williams at end. Kneeland was more of a direct replacement for Lawrence, but if Zimmer stays, I think he likes having Kneeland at right end and Golston at left end on run downs. Obviously, it would be better to have players who can stop the run and rush the passer, too, but maybe Kneeland can at least develop into that kind of player.

What I don’t understand is the complete over-valuing of what a player gives you here in Dallas. If you keep the same players who gave you 1 wild card win in 5 years, why should we expect more than what they’ve already shown us?

The SJ quote above just reinforces what many of us have seen for far too long. The front office here is not putting a championship as the absolute priority. The real priorities are “relevance” and profits. Because if winning a championship was the absolute #1 priority here, changes would have been made at the top a long time ago.
That’s bugging me as well. Paying more for the same players wont add up.

They just aren’t qualified to find better ones outside of McClays draft board, which is better than it was when Jerry and his drinking buddies were doing it, but far from perfect. No one’s is. That’s the point. Don’t rely on it.

We can complain forever but it’s not going to matter. Jerry isn’t letting anyone come in here and take the majority of the ‘credit’ that he feels should belong to him.

I’d love to get him on some truth serum and ask if he would rather win the Super Bowl next year with someone else being recognized as the reason or not win at all.

I think we all know the answer.

I’m no XO guy but I find it strange that OO and Golston had their best seasons under Zimmers scheme when they were selected for Quinn.

Did it take that long for the light to go on?

Did they step it up in their walk year?

Are they somehow better in this scheme?

We don’t even know which scheme we will have next season. Interesting questions but I’m sure Jerry and Son will get it right. They often do, yes?

He won't be able to with our cap and the price they're going to get from other team!

But this is where we fail, and fail big. We like our guy's, can't afford market prices.... and we can't evaluate projections for the future. What's our recent success on these type of extensions?
Low level extensions is one thing, what we did with Steele and Gallup was different, HUGE gamble thinking he was outsmarting other GMs. We need to resign some at least, not major contracts, but some of the role players, if they take a decent contract. Just think we would have too many holes to fill in the draft and free agency if we didn’t retain a couple of the better players…..J Lew or Osi being examples…..CB and DT already slim espeiclly with Diggs likely missing most of next season with that bone graft. ur right though, players we resign just seem to end up underwhelming, she’s show signs of good, but don’t follow through after signing, like we are cursed.
