Too bad we don't have him on staff anymore. I bet he'd be able to find another Tim Seder, hidden gem type languishing in obscurity. Yeah, I know Seder wasn't spectacular but he was decent that first season.

I thought when parcells fired him, it was the stupidest decision ever. Hoffman was straight up money for us. I'd love to get him back here. In fact, I had been wondering why in the last couple months, he wasn't back here to help Folk.

So Coach Parcells fired him?

I wonder why he is in Miami right now then?

He was just a special teams assistant, he even worked under Joe too. And he found some good kickers during his time.

Was in Miami. (Hey, Parcells can learn from his mistakes.) Now with the Chiefs. But yeah, letting him go was dumb.

He was the kicking coach. Plain and simple. Bruce dehaven was the special teams coach under parcells, hoffman was the kicking coach.

it was another good thing parcells did here.

He was an assistant. Not sure why we need to get so specific about the position title.

Not sure if you are trying to 'correct' me about referring to Hoffman having been an assistant under Joe. I wasn't wrong if you were, I just didn't specify what team.

From Wiki:
Hoffman won three Super Bowl titles with the Cowboys, during which seasons his kickers converted a collective 82.3 percent of their field goal attempts. During his time with the franchise, the team's kickers established 15 separate club records, including every single-season record in team history.

I wasnt trying to correct you. I know he was here for a long time and was avezzano's kicking coach.

But he wasnt making or breaking anything on our team. Not sure how we are missing him or that we have since he has been gone.

We have a good special teams coach and we had a good one with dehaven. Read obviously wasnt good but I dont think hoffman would have fixed that had he been here.

Cool, wasn't sure.

He has a pretty impressive resume when you look at some of the kickers and punters he's developed that were successful for at least a couple seasons in the NFL - Chris Boniol, Richie Cunningham, Tim Seder, Dan Carpenter, John Jett, Toby Gowin and Micah Knorr.

yes he had some good ones.

but we havent missed him by any stretch. We have an excellent punter, if you want to make the case that hoffman found him because he was still here when we signed mcbriar in 04, by all means do that.

But I think we have been fine personally. Folk has a physical problem that turned into a mental one. Otherwise he has been excellent. Beuhler has been beyond excellent and l.p. ladacoeur has been a fantastic holder.

of all the things to rue over, steve hoffman by no stretch is one.

If you want to rue, rue over David lee leaving.

I only rue over it 'cause I'd hope maybe Hoffman had some kicker hidden in his back pocket like Tim Seder that could come in instead of Suisham. Not real excited about that.

I think having a 82% + success rate with his kickers is pretty dang good, considering they all pretty much came out of the woodwork. Thing is, I don't think there is anyone on the team that coaches "kicking". In that regard, I think we benefited greatly by having him on the staff. Always had a cheap kicker and never drafted one that I can remember.

I agree.

I think the value of Steve Hoffman was being able to find kickers/punters on the cheap. He could find a guy that nobody heard of and get them to perform at a decent level. When that players contract ran out they'd let him walk and start the process over with another walk-on.The team saved some cap money with Hoffman bringing in the "nobodies",that cap space is pretty important at times.

If you look around the league, you will see that this is the approach taken by many teams. Hoffman got a ton of credit b/c everyone was writing story after story about Dallas so he got a lot of press for it

The exposure may have something to do with it.But it seems to me that Hoffman was the only full time kicking coach in the league(while in Dallas).Hoffmans only job was to deal with kickers,I don't think any other team has ever went to that extreme.

Speaking of Hoffman's value:

Curse of Rian Lindell

The Dallas Cowboys' latest shuffle at kicker serves as a reminder of a huge blunder they made at the start of this decade.

In training camp 2000, the Cowboys were down to Tim Seder and Rian Lindell for the kicking job. They went with Seder, a fine person who lasted 1 1/2 seasons.

Lindell caught on that season with Seattle and has been in the league ever since. He has spent the last seven seasons with Buffalo, whose home ballpark is hard on kickers because of swirling winds. Despite the conditions, LIndell has an 80.6 percent success rate for his career and 16 field goals of 50-plus yards.

With the move of Shaun Suisham for Nick Folk, the Cowboys have made eight changes at kicker in this decade.

Steve Hoffman wasn't the special team coach. He was the kicker's coach. He wouldn't have gotten in Decamillis' way..
