He's the greatest ever because of his combination of song writing ability and technique. There are better song writers, clearly, and there will always be better technicians, but he had the optimum combination of the two. It's obviously subjective but most of the other usuals thrown around (such as Atkins or Hendrix) are clearly lacking in one or the other areas.

SRV had the songwriting edge over Hendrix? I think not! I love SRV, but much like Clapton, songwriting isn't his forte, ability is (hence the high percentage of covers in their recorded work.)

Hendrix, on the other hand, was a genius songwriter: Little Wing, Wind Cries Mary, Voodoo Child, Purple Haze, Are You Experienced?, If 6 Was 9, Axis: Bold As Love...the list goes on and on.

Hendrix certainly was a genius songwriter. I didn't say he wasn't. What Hendrix lacked was technique. He was really a poor guitarist in terms of technique. I think you have to have both to be considered the greatest.

But my point is that SRV, much as I love and would never disrespect him, is pretty far down the pecking order when it comes to song-writing. Technique is a slippery slope, as there's always going to be some kid in a basement who can play ten times faster than Eddie Van Halen. But Jimi could certainly make those notes sing- look no further than Little Wing.

All of the SRV fans check out Kenny Wayne Shepherd if you haven't already. I have been to see him 3 times and he always closes the show with Vodoo Chile. He gives both Jimi and SRV a run for their money on Vodoo Chile.

Close to 20 years.

It's not at all controversial to say Hendrix had poor technique. It's pretty obvious if you can play any guitar whatsoever.

I've been listening to KWS since his early teens (anyone who ever listened to 98.9 out of Shreveport during that time has). Was a big fan, but I'm kinda disappointed he hasn't grown as a guitarist. He's nowhere close to SRV in terms of technique. He's been disappointing as a songwriter too.

His last album wasn't that good because he went for a more mainstream rock feel plus he's not a good singer. He needs to let Noah do all of the singing. Hopefully on the next one he goes back to the blues rock style.

Not sure if u guys have ever heard of Joe Bonomassa, Smoking Joe if you will, but he is imo a better player than kWS. Actually much better, imo.

I am biased though, He is from New York Mills, NY. Right where I am from and I used to watch him play when he was 14. His dad runs a vintage guitar shop in Clinton, NY. Joe played with BB King when he was 4!

He is pretty fabulous, I watched him play claptons solo from white room behind his head when he was 15!!!!! He was in a band when he was a kid called bloodline, everone else was the son of a famous musician.

Bonamassa plays all over all the time. He is in Dallas quite alot of anyone is interested.

if you like that call and response type of blues like srv You might like Smoking Joe.

Lets see YOUR technique.

He could be sloppy during live shows, but to flat out say he lacked technique is stupid.

He lacked technique compared to the other "greats" that are thrown out there. After all, that's what the conversation was about, no? Keep up.

It really depends on who you are comparing him to. If you want to throw in Jazz guys like Montgomery , then yes, he lacked technique. IF you are comparing him to blues/rock guys, then I stand by my previous statement.

I have been rocking out since '84.
My hero?
Adrian Smith of Iron Maiden.
His songwriting and soloing are tasty.
Every note he hits is the right one.
What a craftsman.
Others:
Lindsay Buckingham...underrated.
David Gilmore...see Adrian Smith
Randy Rhoads...gone too soon
Dimebag Darrell...innovator...king of thrash.
Eric Johnson...definition of smooth.
Michael Schenker...wasting his God given ability.

1.Hamer Standard Flametop
2.Ibanez RG 470 w floyd rose
3.Jackson King V(my kind of axe)
All hooked up to a Crate GFX212t thru a Line 6 POD 2.0 and a Morley Bad Horsey II.

Just my two cents worth,

I dont know if James Marshall Hendrix was lacking any technique.....he was such a showman when he got on stage that he rarely just concentrated on playing his axe. But his albums were fantastic. You just dont listen to Jimi...u feel him.

I had the pleasure in seeing both SRV and Clapton up close....first row seats and 8th respectively and they were amazing. Loved both their styles.

Im just bias tho...big collector of Jimi's work.....the man was a genius and never reached his god given talent because of his short life span.

Got to check out the other players mentioned here......
