Someone please explain this poison pill stuff? I have heard it for a few years and have never understood it.

It has to do with an abuse of the requirement that a team trying to retain a player has to match the value of the offer of the team trying to the player.

So for instance, Seattle with Nate Burleson (in revenge for the Hutch deal) put a provision in the offer to Burleson that his $49 million contract would be guaranteed if he played more than 5 games a year in the state of Minnesota. This would never happen if he played with Seattle. However, Minnesota would have to match that offer, and since it would be a certainty that Burleson would play more than 5 games a year, they would be forced to guarantee the entire contract if they resigned him. So they can't.

Basically, its a provision that abuses the requirement of the team to match and it can be anything. There doesn't appear to be any real limitation on it. It would appear that it could be valid for Miami to offer MBIII say $50 million but add in a provision that would double that amount if he ever plays in a game coached by Jason Garrett. See how that would screw Dallas if they had to match that contract? It's pretty much an ******* thing to do.

Honestly, I just don't see the logic of going after Barber when Miami has Ronnie Brown. Even coming off an ACL, he'll still be a good player. They can easily draft a backup. Why give up two picks, when they can use one, who'll be cheaper.

Just to clarify. The poison pill that Minnesota put into Hutch's offer was a guarentee of his entire contract if he was not the highest paid OL on the team in 2006. If Hutch signed with Minnesota, he was going to be by a longshot, so it would never trigger. But if Seattle re-signed Hutch to a matching offer, Hutch would make less than Walter Jones, so Hutch's entire contract would be guarenteed. So Seattle wouldn't do it.

Pissed off, Seattle went after Minnesota WR Nate Burleson. They put 2 poison pills in their offer to Nate: (1) guarentee the entire contract if he played more then 5 games a year in the state of Minnesota; and (2) guarentee the entire contract if his salary was more than the team's RB's combined. Seattle was paying Alexander a buttload, so it would never trigger with them. Minnesota had cheapo RBs, so they would have to guarentee Burleson's entire contract (or hire some RB to pay him a lot to avoid it).

Oh I agree. I would just say that if that offer comes knocking I'd take it.

It doesn't make sense in the objective case.

But we are talking about BP. He is well known for doing things in a predictable fashion. That includes going after his former players that he likes even if it appears he gives up too much for them. No one else would go after MBIII at that cost if they had Brown.

But this is BP. He does things his way.

But he doesn't have the final say in GM matters. LOL

From Wikipedia

After the 1997 season, Martin, a restricted free agent, signed an offer sheet with the New York Jets[2] for $36 million over six years. The Patriots did not match the Jets' offer and received first- and third-round draft picks as compensation.

And then Parcells traded a back he had -- I think it was even Adrian Murrell -- for a 3rd. So he basically gave up a 1st for Martin. (And I just checked, and that first was #18 overall.)

Difference is that this year his first round pick is #1 overall. No way he gives that and the first pick of the 3rd for Barber.

And if he wants to, we'll take it.

If he wants to offer that first and third round tender that we're sure to offer Barber, I say have at it.

But, remember even if he does offer that, we have the right to match the contract. We don't have to just let him walk to Miami like Miami did for Welker last season.

I'm sure he will give us a 1st and a 3rd when he already has Ronnie Brown, Ricky Williams, and Jesse Chapman. Good gosh this is ridiculous.

J. Chatman is a free agent. Maybe he has a future here in a rotation with MB and a draft pick. He's a decent special teams player as well.

I think Parcells knows it will take a miracle to get MB3 in a Dolphins uni.

There will be no miracle on 34th street. Sorry Charlie.

Never ever happen.

Barber is good, real good... but NOT that good.
Barber is worth alot, a whole lot... but not the #1 overall pick.. let alone that with a 3rd.

On ESPN sportscenter Chris Mortinson said the two free agents most intriguing were Restricted free agents Derek Anderson and Marion Barber, Mort went on to say that now that Tuna is in the picture at Miami,he basically will be a player in getting MBIII.... Give it up MORT!!!!

IF THE DOLPHINS WANT TO GIVE US THEIR 1 AND 3 FOR BARBER, I WILL PERSONALLY DRIVE HIM TO MIAMI MYSELF.

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Hell yeah. I'd take that in a heartbeat.

If BP were stupid enough to give us that kind of compensation for MB3, heck, I'd buy the ticket to Miami for the Barbarian. :)

Mort needs to note that just because Parcells signs Barber to an offer sheet, Dallas can still match the offer and negate the move.

He also needs to note that the Fins have Ronnie Brown on their roster. Going after Barber by paying him huge bucks and giving up the #1 overall pick and the first pick in the 3rd round while already having Ronnie Brown on your team isn't something that Tuna is likely to do.

#1 over all and the first pick of the 3rd round and a posion pill contract and the Fins can have MB3.

Or have they outlawed the posion pill contract?

I don't think the union will let them outlaw it.

If we got those picks......imagine if we drafted both D-Mac...and Felix Jones! lol.
