What is a strong arm?

Elway probably could throw the ball the furthest and the hardest, but I am not sure it was just pure arm strength. He had a big wind up and great lower leg drive. It was like a full body pass on just about every throw. He always looked liked a baseball pitcher on every throw. I think he would stride into his throws more than any other QB I have watched.

Marino just seemed to whip out there with nothing, but his wrist. He obviously used his legs, too, but he seemed to be able to generate a lot with just his arms.

Favre seemed to be able to throw it with nothing, but arm at times. He could be falling backwards with his legs tied up and still zip it down field.

I know Vinny and Randall could both throw it 70 yards down field, but neither really looked like they had zip on some of their throws. When I watched them throw deep outs the ball seemed to float out to the receivers.
What a observation you made every QB, has a certain style when it comes to throwing.

You're dead on with Cunningham, and Testaverde though.

It's pretty obvious that Jason Campbell has a strong arm. As for his accuracy ...

I don't believe there has ever been a QB with a stronger arm than Elway.

Elway and Jeff George had the strongest arms I've seen from guys no longer playing.

As for today's players, I think that Jay Cutler has the strongest arm. And I'm not talking about who can throw it a mile. Distance has a lot to do with form, in addition to arm strength. Cutler can throw the intermediate pass with as much velocity as I've ever seen. I don't think anyone's even close to him, among current players.

There was a kid named Rick McIver who played 6-man football in South Texas, I think. Became a backup at Texas. Don't think he ever played much. The Cardinals, I believe, drafted him around the 4th or 5th round, mostly on that golden arm. He had a howitzer. I believe it was said at the time he maybe had the strongest arm many folks had ever seen. Of course, that didn't make him a success. But he had a rocket that left you in awe. I doubt a kid was ever picked ahead of him on the playground.

1a) Elway
1b) George

Maybe they were just stories, but I know people who played with both in college and it never fails that some receiver's hand was busted (in the webbing) from a quick slant or an "in".

Secondary coaches know :)

Steve Bartkowski
John Elway
Doug Williams
Jeff George
Ryan Leaf
(These five guys had the stronges arms I ever saw. All could throw long and all could humm it with the very best of them. Not talking about best QB, just best arms I've ever seen.)

Two players that probably should have been on this list but never really had an opportunity because of there situations or teams were Bert Jones and Joe Gillam.

Brett Favre
Steve McNair
Troy Aikman
Terry Bradshaw
Carson Palmer
Drew Bledsoe (His arm was stronger when he was younger)
Warren Moon
Joe Willie
Jack Thompson
Neil Lomax
Brian Sipe
(All of these guys had arms that were just a cut below but all had or have exceptional arms.)

I'm told that both Bobby Lane and Sammy Baugh had great arms, maybe as good as anybody but I never really had the oppotutnity to see them play so I can't really comment on them.

As an FYI, I hear that Joe Flacco could have as good an arm as has been seen in the NFL in a very long time. I have never really seen him play so I can't say if that is true or not but I heard this reported on two seperate occasions.

Jay Cutler, does have a rocket arm and I'll add David Garrard, to the list also.

I see Peyton Manning is getting little love.
He has exceptional arm strength but he's not know for throwing a 75 yd pass on a rope, but he is getting alot of love in my most accurate QB thread.

Patrick Crayton? He can toss the ball all over the field.

Seriously, let us not forget about our old friend Vinny. Testeverde could chunk it down field big time.

I listed Vinny, as one of the strongest arm QBs I ever seen play.

I think he still holds the record in the NFL QB Challenge, for throwing a pass 87 yds downfield.

Probably one of the strongest one I remember seeing was Jay Shroeder. I hated him but he had a ROCKET!

Uncle Rico could out throw all of them.

Recognize.

Well its just assumed that Uncle Rico comes before all the rest. No need to discuss something as concrete as Rico's arm strength.

You are showing your age.

Vinny hasn't had that arm since the Bicentennial.
