Sturm Q&A on the QB Situation

This video is exactly why Brandon Weeden should've never been replaced with Matt Cassel. Weeden's strength is throwing deep, so the Cowboys should've gotten him a deep threat when he replaced Romo. Why the Cowboys had Weeden throwing short passes is beyond me; the guy has a rocket arm. Here he throws with pinpoint accuracy to Josh Gordon, 60 yards of it in the air!

You must have forgotten how long he holds the ball and how often he walk himself right into a sack.

I still don't understand. We have the #4 pick. Why would we have to give it up as if we'll get nothing in return? And why is it our biggest asset in years?

Is he saying that it would require us to give up our best draft position in years to acquire a quarterback?

Even then, you're supposed to pick the best players with the higher pick. Again, I don't want to be too critical if I'm not understanding, but the way it's worded just isn't clear and just doesn't make sense.

Actually this is pretty clear.
Dallas hasn't drafted this high since Jimmy first got here.
It is the best asset you've had in 20+ years.

There is obviously some desire to use that for immediate return.
But there are also a couple intriguing QBs.

It isn't cut and dried.

Move to grab Goff, bring in JF, let them battle for the # 2. They will have a great chance to show what they've got. We'll go from rags to riches.

Big ben came from a small school too. Just saying

Big Ben came from a D1/FBS school which is light years different than D2/FCS.
He also was a star at Findley. Ohio which is a national powerhouse.

Wentz is making a much larger leap than Big Ben did but he may well be more athletic.

We saw Romo take a few years here, Wentz may need that time as well.

He won't be there at 4. Only way we have a shot at him is to trade up to get him. Might be our best chance to get a franchise QB for a long time.

I'm thinking the same. I wonder what it'll take to move up 3 spots. If it means next year's #1, I may have to seriously consider it (assuming we rebound in a big way next year and picking in the mid to late 20's).

I figured he was trying to say that, but it still was poorly written.

The other 2 are top prospects in this draft and while they are very exciting players who could potentially be that guy, the fact is that it would require the Cowboys to give up their biggest draft asset in years and years to pull the trigger on the guy.

The Cowboys are giving "up their biggest asset in years" ANYWAY by taking a player with the #4 pick. But they're getting something back in return, namely, a top player - whether that be a quarterback or a defensive end or a corner.

Now, if Strum is saying the Cowboys would be gambling on one of the quarterbacks instead of taking a more sure-fire prospect, that makes a little more sense.

But it should have been put more clearly than it was. Again, poorly written.

Yeah, I'm not sure on something like this. Maybe our second this year and next year's 3rd or something of that nature. I'm just guessing.

How does Cook compare to Cousins as a draft prospect?

About the same from what I see, at least now. But I think Cook was more publicized as a franchise player, even a year or so ago. Plus I think he has turned off people with his attitude.

I find this to be a fair writeup and I definitely agree with not even bothering with manziel. While I say no to RG III, he would be a better backup with more upside if you can tame him down some. But he would be backup only IMO so would he come here to do that?

I will be very surprised if we don't take a QB at pick4 (or in a small trade down)

I am 95% confident we will be drafting a QB in the first round.........Jerry and Steven have both said QB is our biggest need.

I'd take Goff or Lynch in the First and use a comp pick on Cook if he falls.

I heard Cook backed out of the Senior Bowl..........apparently he doesn't want to risk a bad performance

That sends up so many red flags for me.

Could be. I have seen more of Cook than anyone else. Just a guy to me. And it has been pointed out by many that he is the qb yet wasn't selected as a captain which may speak to his leadership. His lack of accuracy is my biggest complaint.

But would you draft Cook in either the first or second rounds?

I just don't see him being as good a passer as some of the other guys.
