Sturm says Dak most valuable pick in NFL history

I was surprised to see this from Sturm, but here it is:

"Based on the position of the pick and the team's distance from the playoffs without the pick, the value of Dak Prescott's selection and subsequent success is perhaps the best value for any franchise and any year since the draft started.

In other words, bonita fish are big and Dak Prescott is your answer. What he is doing is upsetting the apple cart for the entire history of football. There are probably no real comparisons. Either rookie QBs have limited success or they were taken at the top of the draft and still had limited success. This is absurdly unprecedented."

Sturm answered this question:
Q: Bob who is the best value pick for Dallas in the draft? Prescott has been incredible for a fourth rounder, but Anthony Brown hasn't been too bad for a sixth rounder either...who's more valuable at where they were taken?
Basically, Sturm answered the question in a polite way of saying, "Are you nuts?"

I'm generally a fan of Sturm's work, but that's preposterously silly at this stage.

6th rounder Brady has gone to how many Super Bowls?

No denying Dak in the 4th is a home-run though.

Sturm has been very level headed when it comes to Dak. He initially thought Romo should have gotten his job back. But as weeks have passed he changed his mind.

Dak has to be considered the best pick in NFL history, based on just his rookie season of course. Nobody knows what the future holds.

538 pointed out before the season opener just how rare it is to start a rookie quarterback who was selected so low in the draft like Dak was with the 135th pick.

"You have to go all the way back to 1977 to find a quarterback not selected in the first 130 picks of the NFL draft who then went on start his team’s season opener as a rookie.

That player was Randy Hedberg, who started for the terrible Buccaneers franchise in 1977. Hedberg is one of the worst quarterbacks in NFL history — he finished his career with a 0.0 passer rating. And, to date, he is the only quarterback since the merger in 1970 to be drafted outside of the top 130 picks and then start in his team’s season opener just a few months later."

There is just not enough information to make that statement.
Agreed. Until we win the big enchilada or he proves that this year is no fluke then we maybe able to make that claim.

Yeah in that context, I get it. Not only do rookie qbs rarely start, ones selected late are even rarer, ones with immediate success even rarer, and with this specific level of success even rarer. So it's one of those perfect storm kinda deals where of course it's unprecedented.

They are writing this as though Dak would have started if there were not injuries.
It was a fluke situation where both players in front of him went down before the opener. That is the ONLY reason he started the opener.

Once he got his chance, he took off though. The rest, so far, his history.

I love Sturm, but basing this off 12 games is a bit much.

However, if he wins the Super Bowl as a rookie, I think you can start making that judgment. I wouldn't say you're 100% correct, but you can starting making that judgment.

I completely agree. It's amazing the course of events that had to transpire to allow Dak to start the season opener. To Dak's great credit he seized the opportunity. Remember the draft day call when Dak said, "I'm ready"? Apparently he meant it.

Ridiculous.

Dak inherited the best offensive line in football, the next Adrian Peterson in the draft, a Hall of Fame tight end, and a terrific group of receivers.

Dak is great value in the 4th round, but he's no Tom Brady, Roger Staubach, or Warren Moon in draft value. He's not even Tony Romo.

A former 1st round pick (Brandon Weeden) and a former pro bowler (Matt Cassell) inherited the same things last year....and produced a season worse than the Dave Campo years.

I'm ok with this assessment. No matter what happens from here on out this season. Because his assessment is based on the value of the pick over the course of the current season. And what probably would have happened had the pick not been made.

Without Romo last year the Cowboys were 4-12.

And the Cowboys were arguably going to be without Romo again this season.

But with Dak, this year the Cowboys are 11-1 and have already clinched a playoff spot. And the team is essentially the same team from last year to this year. Except for having Zeke. Which is huge. Yes. But still. Not THAT kind of huge.

Dak has turned the conventional wisdom of what we think we can expect from a rookie QB on its head. Nobody will ever look at it in exactly the same way again.

Talk about having an impact. Wow!!!
