I just want the Cowboys to secure home-field advantage. There are a lot of tough games coming up.
We all want the team to gain HFA, but it doesn't have anything to do with the silliness of Sturm's statement.

I believe Sturm made the mistake of not clarifying his reply to the mailer's question. He should have said something along the lines:
"Based on the position of the pick and the team's distance from the playoffs without the pick, the value of Dak Prescott's selection and subsequent success is perhaps the best value of all players during their initial 12 games of their rookie season for any franchise and any year since the draft started.
Proper context would have removed all doubt about possible hyperbole.

Is Bob off his meds again?
Let's see.
Some guy named Rodger for example!
Non QB named bullet Bob, track star can't play football.
The list from the 60s & 70s could get pretty long.

Ridiculous.

Dak inherited the best offensive line in football, the next Adrian Peterson in the draft, a Hall of Fame tight end, and a terrific group of receivers.

Dak is great value in the 4th round, but he's no Tom Brady, Roger Staubach, or Warren Moon in draft value. He's not even Tony Romo.

What did Tom Brady, Warren moon, and Roger staubach do their rookie year?

Are you aware that Dak STILL has to read the defense and complete the throws to the recievers?

What more does Dak have to do to prove he's a AMAZING QB for a rookie? Will winning ROY do it?? What about MVP? Super Bowl MVP?

With regards to want did so and so do in their rookie year, many didn't play.
Next like Rodger called their own plays
Rodger did that until the 75 season the year his mother died I believe.
It is hard to compare the different decades now because of rule changes.
This conversation needs to take place in ten years.

 I'm just saying.. Folks can't just like the guy and let that be that. I like him. He's cute as a button. Charming. Says and does ALL the right things. But damn...folks always gotta take it to the next level.

How do you not take it to the next level? This kid has broken all kinds of records, taken this team to an 11-1 record, and has looked like a seasoned vet out there.

It looks like we are set at Qb for many years to come. If we had a better defense, we would be favored to win the super bowl right now.

Please keep the discussion centered or around Sturm's comments on Prescott's draft value. Let's keep the thread within the Fan Zone. Thanks.

Easy.. I want to see more... This greatest season ever business could be his only great season. The NFL is littered with one-hit wonders and flashes in the pan. Julius Jones anyone? lol IJS, I'm going to enjoy the mess out of this season. As a fan, I know they don't come around that often.

As for Dak... I'll be expecting to see him do it again.. next year....and then the next year.. and then... you get my drift.

I'm generally a fan of Sturm's work, but that's preposterously silly at this stage.

6th rounder Brady has gone to how many Super Bowls?

No denying Dak in the 4th is a home-run though.
With all due respect, he said rookie. Brady did NOT have the rookie season that Dak is having, nor has any QB in the history of the world, it's just fact. As a rookie, he's saying that Dak is the best overall rookie QB ever, and that's true.

Now if you want to talk about who's the best QB, he certainly isn't implying that Dak is that.

You boys aren't understanding what Bob is saying.

He is talking on the return of investment per draft 'dollar' and he is projecting a career arc into the future with the idea that Dak will continue playing as he is now.

Stat guys--and Bob is one--look at things like Approximate Value, which tries to assign a mathematical value to each players contributions towards winning football.

You can see an AV ranking of all players all-time, here:
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/leaders/career_av_career.htm

Meanwhile many of us are familiar with the draft table where there are points connected to each draft pick. This past draft here is how draft 'points' where spent.
Goff cost 3000 draft points
Wentz cost 2600 draft points
Zak costs a mere 96 points

So the return on investment, of 96 Cowboy draft is already amazing, and projects to be out of this world.

Romo wasn't drafted at all, so his value...one could say is...INFINITE! :)

Sturm went way overboard with that comment. lol Hard to say Dak is a more valuable pick than Tom Brady who was selected in the 6th round. The Pats were 5-11 in 2000 during Brady's rookie year and Belichick was just another HC on the hot seat. No pick in NFL history at least up to this point was more valuable to a franchise than Brady. He's played in more SB's (6) than any QB in history, winning 4 of them and is regarded as one of the top two QBs to ever play the game. He's still going strong at 40 and will be a first ballot Hall of Famer. As far as Cowboys history goes, no pick was more valuable than the 10th rounder the team used on Roger Staubach in 1964.

Although the Cowboys were a good team when he started his career with them, they couldn't get over the hump and he led the team to their first two championships and is the main reason the Cowboys became America's Team. The popularity that the Cowboys still have today all started with Roger Staubach. Staubach's popularity and amazing comebacks is what made the Cowboys so popular. The selection of Dak in the 4th round could end up being one of the most valuable picks ever but there's still a long way to go to determine that.

It's like a stock investment...Hey, I only spent pennies, but look what I got in return!

A pick in the fourth round--for an elite quarterback--is historically like buying a car for the price of a fancy dinner.

Dak is the greatest QB to ever live, all things considered. He is practically a Tom Brady but with more skills. Ive been saying this for years and it is starting to come to light to everyone else. He will be the Michael Jordan of football... And Dallas got him in the 4th round. I would say for sure it is unprecedented.

Good point. Roger was drafted way late (10th round!?) as the Cowboys were smart and patient about him returning from his military service.

Sturm grew up north...probably overlooked Roger's return on draft investment.

Dak inherited a 4-12 team and the OL is the same one that three backup QBs failed behind last season. We have the same key receivers we've had for the past few years. Dak didn't inherit Zeke, he was drafted along with Dak and both had to prove themselves as NFL players. Dak's value will be determined the rest of this season and into the future. Even if he leads the Cowboys to a championship this season, his value still won't be up there with Brady or Stuabach but he will move past Romo.
