Subtle Changes to the Forum?

Right, it's a welcome change. But I'm not sure it's the best idea to have a quote that is only 10 or so lines truncated. As you can see, it has truncated your quote right now and that was not a lengthy quote at all. If it is truncating quotes of this length, it becomes more annoying to have to hit the "view full quote" button every time than it does to see the entire quote. If there's a way to change the settings to where it only applies to much longer quotes, that would be appreciated.
test...

As I suspected, it's a character limit. My quote was only a few sentences long, over a few lines. Clearly the post was not "too long," yet it gets truncated, forcing people to take an extra step to see the rest of the quote. Actually, oddly enough, you don't even have the option to view the rest of this quote (without clicking on the link to view the original post). It appears there's some sort of glitch in that regard too.

Obviously, it's y'all's call as to how long quote should be before they're truncated. But I think if it's bugged both CL and me to the point where we'd bring it up, there are many others that would get annoyed by it.

Yeah. I actually like the shrunk quotes because it prevents someone from quoting a page-long article only to add ":laugh1:" at the end of it.

But for those that like to have their entire page destroyed by long quotes, maybe you all could make it a user-option? I'm not sure if that's in the software.

Thanks for point out the bug. It's fixed now.

I think that's the real problem -- when someone quotes a page-long post. The problem isn't when someone quotes a post that is a few sentences long. But this affects both.

There is no perfect solution but this one provides the best balance. I understand your concerns but given that the content affected 1) can be viewed with one single click 2) is only duplicated content .. quoted content in other words and 3) makes pages shorter in many threads, this was a good move.

It's only truncated in the reply. If people want to see the original quote, then they can scroll back to the original post, or click the arrow by the name in the quoted post to skip back to it.

And yes, the quote function does have a character limit.

As a mobile user, I'd think you appreciate not having to scroll thru a bunch of long quoted posts. But hey maybe you like re-reading long quoted posts.

WG hits a home run right here. This really helps mobile users a lot.

Wait, does theogt not have the link that says [View Full Quote]? If not that could be a browser issue.

And as someone that uses the site on my iPhone very often, I find it great that I don't have to scroll through an entire article twice just to read some new guy post "Cool article, thanks."

On the iPhone it's never really an issue because scrolling and viewing webpages is extremely workable.

Oh well, guess I have to click an extra button now every time I want to see what someone is replying to. I just thought you guys could set the limit a little higher.

No, there was a bug in the software that Reality fixed pretty quickly.

Yes, that is very annoying and this is a great idea to fix that issue. But this "fix" goes well beyond that. A post that is only a few sentences long gets truncated. So, for the vast majority of posts that are only a few sentences long, you have to click an extra button to see the message that was replied to.

At least it pops up right there in the reply instead of opening a separate tab or window.

I can't believe people have 1 single complaint about the functionality of this site. I ain't saying that to stroke a single ego nor for brownie points from folks I've never even met.

This is ridiculous. Put down the silver spoon and enjoy what you DO have.

Seriously. An extra click? How friggin' spoliled are you? Good God.

I guess you could have said this about people complaining about scrolling through longer posts too. "You can't scroll through a five sentence long post? How friggin' spoiled are you?"

It was just a suggestion that the limit be set a little higher. Heaven forbid people provide input on functionality of the website.

:hammer:

Especially if you are member that donates regularly to the site.

BTW, a "mobile" version of Cowboyszone would be a great addition.

Had I viewed this nonsense...............I'd of been all over it. :)

BTW - five sentences are not one of the 'longer' posts but I know how you like to keep things in your perspective. ;)

B.S., Theo. You argue for the sake of arguing. You'd of beat this to it's ultimate death and then some. It's a simple 'click' for god's sake. A suggestion should be functional as well. Otherwise it's damn near complaining........................especially in this case, IMO.

If you keep track of all he nano-seconds you've spent 'extra clicking' above and beyond the call of duty while on this site for the remainder of your existence.............we'll give you twenty minutes of your life back.

No intention to disrespect you, theo. I find this particular issue to be about as moot as one can be. Remember; it's JMO, of course.

That option is still being evaluated, but the staff is all for it. Implementation is always subject to what Reality's goals for the site. So that's why nothing has been done.

First you'd have to be one that could afford the extra money. Whatever that may be. Secondly, I missed the fine print that read "Donate or shut up".

Look at Seven, gunning to be a Moderator :laugh2: .

Until Reality says that members are not allowed to offer suggestions regarding the site, posters are free to do just that.

It's odd that you say that Theo is arguing for the sake of arguing when you appear to be doing just that.
