Subtle Changes to the Forum?

It should go without saying, but I hope you guys don't get the feeling that user suggestions are a sign that anyone doesn't appreciate the work you put into the website. At least for myself, I try to show the appreciation by donating a not inconsiderable amount every year.

Not at all .. suggestions are not only welcomed but encouraged. Many of the changes that have been made to CZ over the years were based on user suggestions. Sometimes they work out, sometimes they don't. A healthy debate, as long as it is rooted in sincerity, helps yield better and more favorable results.

We as moderators often disagree on things but we discuss and debate them and in most cases, not only do we find a solution, it turns out to be better than anyone expected. For example, I have already made several changes to the new Quote Truncation system and will continue to work on it as ideas and possible improvements come to mind. The first version of the Quote Truncation system did not include a "View Full Quote" link .. it simply truncated the quote and that was it .. so things have and will continue to improve when possible

people can post things that mods can't read or see unless you click on the [View Full Quote] each time it appears.

If you go back to the post where I quote Hostile (I wrote "Here's the kicker" as a response), and click on View Full Quote - where I quoted Hostile - and you'll see that I included some extra words and an image. Short of someone alerting you, the only way you'd know it was there is if you clicked on the link.

Well, that's something to consider, and we'll be on the lookout for it. But more often than not, what casmith7 posted is more likely to occur. A Hostile novella gets quoted and at the end, somebody posts . So IMO, any truncation is better than none.

I do appreciate the decision to increase the number of characters before truncation. It only goes to show how open Reality and the mods are to visitor input and that's one of the reasons why this site is as good as it is.

Well, it never even crossed my mind that you guys don't appreciate the work maintaining the site. If we didn't want you all to have a discussion about it, the staff would've shut the thread down. Lol.

In this case, the dialogue is appreciated and we do try to take your guys feedback into consideration after a change is made.

Yeah, but it has been a great move. Lurkers appreciated the articles staying alive longer and so did the writers who contacted me about it. It didn't do anything to slow the user generated discussions, in fact, they picked up.

Reality and WG mentioned the discussions we have as Mods about these things. Sometimes these discussions get very animated, and have even gotten heated at times.

This thread is really no different in that regard.

Yep. This discussion reminds me of that, as well.

But the result of the discussion was the Quick Links bar and I think it ended up very workable because of that. I use the bar constantly.

This is a perfect example of why this change was implemented .. You bolded a small part of the quote when that is the only part you should have included in your quote since that was what you are referring to.

Why "should" I only have quoted the part I bolded? I'm aware of conserving bandwidth and cut out only the part I want to quote all the time. But at other times, I think the entire post is so good it deserves to be quoted, with only a couple of other sentences bolded for emphasis.

I have no idea what is so irritating about it. I honestly do not get it.

I honestly do not get what is so irritating to you about some newbie quoting an entire post that is "too long". Doesn't mean it isn't irritating to you, though.

Sure, life will go on, like you guys said. You could make the whole forum maroon, black, and gold, and most of us would probably still post here as much as ever. Doesn't mean it would be a great idea, though.

So split it into two quotes .. one with the parts prior to the bold that will be truncated and a second quote with the part you bolded. Problem is solved then.
