My brother and my nephew live in CC. I was born in Ingleside and raised all over that place from Aransas Pass to Mustang Island. My daddy and I both served there in the Coast Guard. Good memories.
I live right next to Trans Mountain. Dyer is an interesting street going from the base to the ghetto- nowadays they are looking one and the same sadly.
It took a few trips to get the folks in the Segundo Barrio to accept me despite my palish skin, but now I'm a local and I like the local grocers there.
I live basically in an Army community and since I served with the Coast Guard they give me no guff.
At least not the youngins...
I know of JJ. He's something of local celebrity, veteran and well respected PI if I recall... Never met him personally though.
I was married briefly, two years, to Frances Tashiro. Her prior husband owned the Tashiro Estates in New Mexico.
I met her when she was on probation, and kept her clean and got her off probation before we separated ways. During the Ali - Frazier boxing matches, her husband lost a considerable amount of money and didn't immediately pay off. A person snuck into their bedroom and shot her point blank range with a shotgun. She retained one leg 1/2 inch shorter than the other.
I was sent, alone, to Korea, and that was when JRR Armstrong published a book of experiences. Fran was half of a chapter in his book. He started out by describing her as a sexual seductress that put the hair on his neck at edge. She had to sign a release for him to publish his book with her in it.
I was either going to get out of Service and work for Legal Assistance in El Paso, or reup and go to Paralegal School in the Army. I met a person while making application to Legal Aide, his name being Zachariah Taylor. He was an ex-GI, during Viet Nam. He became a dealer in heroine upon his return, but while in prison, had access to a legal library and represented his own case to the Supreme Court...won...and the conviction was over turned.
All Zach had to do was bid his time and he would have been put through a Law School and with already making it to and winning a case at the level of the Supreme Court, would have had a very lucrative practice with some firm.
While in Korea, I asked how Zach was doing, when I was told he was back in prison. I asked why, and was told that he was impatient at getting money, and robbed three Zales Jewelry stores in El Paso...go figure.
Congratulations on both your Dad's and your service. I say thank you...and mean it. I hope that you never had to serve on the Great Lakes...'What's on the salad bar?'
Thanks for the share, and take care my friend.
Oh, and they caught two tiger sharks off Port Aransas weighing in at 900-1100 pounds each.
