No theres not. Over 40 yards, someone who runs 1/10 of a second faster than another player will be 1.5 yards ahead. So the difference between a 4.5 and a 4.6 is about 4.5 feet. The difference between a 4.27 and 4.33, over 40 yards, is less than 2.5 feet. Not a big difference at all.

*this is based on something I saw on TV last year, leading up to the combine so I haven't done the math on it myself. I'll check it later today.

a 4.3 40 is 9.30 m/s
a 4.4 40 is 9.09 m/s
a 4.5 40 is 8.89 m/s
a 4.6 40 is 8.70 m/s

In 4.3 seconds a

4.3 travels 40.00m
4.4 travels 39.09m
4.5 travels 38.23m
4.6 travels 37.41m

Its not linear but its pretty darn close .91m, .86m, .82m splits respectively. The gaps will widen proportionally but the ratio is pretty close to 1. It looks like decent rule of thumb would be a .8m difference between the various 40 times and a defender can tackle someone if they are within a yard.

Take from that what you will.

It's nice to see us argue over nonsense. Can't wait till draft day, wish I could just sleep until then.

if DeSean Jackson is there at 22 because of his size, I would be all over him

him and Chris Johnson would be an ideal 1st round for me

you're talking about an explosive offense here

22. DeSean
28. CJ
2nd. Charles Godfrey

If all our offense did was line up and run 40 yard dashes, it'd be a fantastic draft.

I agree our offense needs some game breaking speed, but I'd choose between which one of them is available at 28 and take CB at 22. The Ted Ginn comparison will haunt Jackson, but Ginn had no chance to perform in Miami. A guy like Jackson would complement T.O. and Witten extremely well.

Are we drafting football players or track stars?

Exactly.

As much fun as it would be to have the all-star team of wind sprints in practice, I'd like to actually win a playoff game at some point.

I love generic draft comments

btw, I pushed Chris Johnson back into my 1st round because I don't see him lasting till our pick in the 2nd

Sweed - 4.46

He actually ran a little slower than I anticipated, but faster than the 4.55-4.6 times he was being credited with...

Don't be surprised if he gets down a little closer to 4.40 at Texas' Pro Day in about a month... their track is known to be pretty fast...

Anyway, this should lay to rest the questions about him being fast enough to get separation in the NFL...

Alridge 4.36, 4.33
Charles 4.36, 4.39
Jones 4.44, 4.47
Mendenhall 4.44, 4.37
McFadden 4.27, 4.33
Rice 4.44
Stewart 4.44, 4.49
Smith 4.43, 4.56
Forte 4.51
Simpson 4.38, 4.37
Slaton 4.44, 4.45

Schmitt 4.70, 4.75

Hey, Schmitt's times were a little better than I expected... I figured him for 4.8-4.85 in the 40...

Did you see him running? No way would I step in front of that guy at full speed.

4.8 would be pretty darn slow, in the videos I've seen of him I could tell he had a little bit of a motor.

I'm not sure I understand the debate here. McFadden ran fast...scorching fast the 1st go round. blazing fast the 2nd go round. He's going to be a top pick. So what's the point being debated?

Whose is bigger, just like always... :D

Well, I think you have to weigh the risk reward associated with a project type player. To me, you can teach or coach a great many things but you can't teach or coach speed. If you can't seperate in todays NFL, it's real hard to be productive as a WR. I'd worry about his ability to get open consistantly. Now, if he were going to be a TE, then that would be pretty decent time. As a WR, I think you have to look for certain things and speed is one of them. What are his agility splits, anybody know?
