Steve Walsh in the first.
Turned out we were able to salvage him.
That first in the supplemental turned out to be the #1 pick in the draft. Talk about expensive.
Dallas did better than "salvage him" I'd say:
Cowboys` Trade Of Walsh Looks Like Steal Of A Deal
December 30, 1990|By RANDY GALLOWAY, Dallas Morning News
Do yourself a huge favor, and totally ignore the next dipstick who happens to mention that the Dallas Cowboys made a mistake in trading Steve Walsh.
Obviously, no mistake was made. Not even now that Troy Aikman has gone down and Babe Laufenberg is in charge, more or less.
Jimmy Johnson made a steal of a deal with the Saints. Johnson won`t admit it, of course, because of his affection for one of his old Hurricane heads. But privately, he knows he ripped off New Orleans.
Three months ago, the Cowboys got first-, second- and third-round draft picks in exchange for Walsh. Today, if the Saints tried to deal this quarterbacking property, they couldn`t recoup a lone first-round choice. Not even if they threw in Pat O`Brien`s.
The Walsh trade could bring an impact player thanks to all those draft picks. Which is much more than it has done for New Orleans.

Can you agree with what Randy Galloway had to say about it, or are you convinced it was nothing more than a stupid decision to take Walsh in the Supplemental Draft?
And, yes, as it turned out we traded away what would have been the #1 pick in the 1990 Draft. But as it also turned out, Dallas drafted Emmitt Smith at #17 (one of our picks as part of the Hershel Walker deal). Not exactly a booby prize. I'll take how things worked out and be happy about it.
Can't just cherry-pick one situation, as if in a vacuum. Well, you can, but that doesn't seem a balanced way to look at it all, IMO. Both historical events happened. Look for the good, it's there.
