I'd feel better about Taco if he at least flashed against reserves, but so far that hasnt been the case.
He's a #1 draft pick getting dominated by players that will be out of the league in a month.

Strahan has 1 sack as a rookie.
Not exactly a high bar.

But Strahan developed with reps and gained strength, skills, stamina.

Taco has the requisite athleticism to be successful but he also lacks those other areas.
He has to get stronger, play harder, gain stamina and learn a variety of pass rush moves beyond his spin.

I see similarities to another Giants defensive end - Jason Pierre-Paul.
A lot of similar measurables between he and Taco. And Pierre-Paul managed just 4.5 sacks as a rookie while guys like Umenyora and Justin Tuck were getting 11.5 each and the Giants had a high quality pass rush.

Taco isn't stepping into a situation with pass rushers putting up anything close to those numbers so he obviously doesn't have the 'help' Pierre-Paul had.

If he gets close to 5 sacks and makes an impact as part of the rotation, I'll consider that a success.

And this is coming from a guy who much preferred TJ Watt.

I'm sure as heck not making any decisions on Taco based off of a few plays in his first preseason game.

JPP isn't a bad comparison. I always saw Carlos Dunlap when I watched Taco.

And no kidding, you were all aboard the TJ Watt train and you're able to still have common sense.

It is possible, folks.

As long as he has the motor and stamina of the Golden Cock he will be just fine.

Fojeeebussakechris...if he had multiple sacks in his first game ala Selvie; then the same people would be trippin' that he was/is either a pro bowler or otherwise still a bust.

Give the kid a Pre-Season would ya, lets hope he stays healthy that's the biggest progress stopper in development, why complain, he will be what he is and provided he stays on the field, that's gonna be Greg Ellis 8th overall, at worst.

I think his ceiling is very high. Michael Strahan high? I dunno about that. He could easily beat Koney Ealy 60th overall, but solid.

I'm not one having bad Taco indigestion just yet:omg:

However...
JP was somewhat of a freak athlete coming out.
Remember the predraft standing back flips? Or repeated the back flips across the field?

Marinelli liked him after the draft and then he publicly dogged him after the game after only 16 reps. Tells me 2 things:

1. Rod expects a lot out of him

2. He wouldn't waste his time pushing Taco if he didn't think the potential was there to be developed

He wouldn't have been drafted that early or at all if Rod didn't think the potential or talent was there. They're also not going to draft a guy they're completely blind about, they knew what they were going to get when they took him and I'm confident in the staff's competence to draft the right guy early. They tend to do that well most of the time these days.

I still like the Justin Tuck comparison. Not a superstar, but a solid guy that could make a Pro Bowl along the way.

And Tuck only had one sack as a rookie. Taco is probably our backup LDE right now, let him learn the game like every other rookie does.

Putting him in Strahan's conversation is a reach.........

This is Taco's college profile

College career[edit]
Charlton appeared in 10 games as a backup defensive end his freshman year at Michigan in 2013. As a sophomore in 2014, he appeared in 12 games with one start and had 19 tackles and 3.5 sacks. He appeared in 13 games with three starts his junior year in 2015 and recorded 30 tackles and 5.5 sacks.[4][5] Charlton became a starter his senior year in 2016.[6][7]

During the 2016 season, Charlton recorded 38 tackles, including 11 tackles-for-loss, and led the team with 10 sacks. Following the 2016 season, Charlton was named to the All-Big Ten defensive first-team, by both the coaches and media.[8][9]

Here's profile of Strahan's college career....

College career[edit]
Strahan followed in the footsteps of his uncle Art, who also played defensive end at Texas Southern University. Strahan was so dominant he drew double teams, and TSU coaches dubbed Strahan double teaming "Strahan rules."[4] By his junior season, Strahan began to turn himself into an NFL prospect.[5] As a senior with the Texas Southern Tigers, Strahan was selected All-America first team by The Poor Man's Guide to the NFL Draft, The Sheridan Network, Edd Hayes Black College Sports Report and the Associated Press. He recorded 62 tackles with a school-record 19 quarterback sacks and 32 tackles totaling 142 yards in losses. He was also selected Division I-AA Defensive Player of the Year by The Poor Man's Guide and Edd Hayes Black College Sports Report. In 1992, he was named First Team All-Southwestern Athletic Conference and the SWAC's Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. He was also named Black College Defensive Player of the Year. As a junior in 1991, Strahan led the SWAC with 14.5 quarterback sacks. His 41.5 career sacks is a Texas Southern record.

2 different players.

What was amazing about Strahan was in his prime years, particularly the year he set the sack record, he won almost completely on bull rushes. It wasn't until the end of Strahan's career that he shed the weight to get quicker and used a more wide variety of arsenal of moves. And he still had excellent punching power.

Taco is more of an angular speed guy who uses his speed, spin move and motor to get to the QB. The way he moves and he does have some bend to him at that size makes him enticing because with his arms if he learns better hand technique and improves his upper body strength it can make for an excellent player. But at this point in time he's basically a large project for us.

Look at both players' combine numbers.

And let me know when backflips make someone better at football.
