They fall in love with the idea of the big uglies, I guess. But Collins was always Leary's replacement. The real ability a team needs is the ability to identify and add talent to develop just like we did with Leary. Find another UDFA guy you reportedly have a 3rd or 5th round grade on or whatever it was and develop him.

And I like Leary more than Collins, honestly. Just not enough more that it overrides the contract situation, youth, and degenerative knee problem/back issues. But Zack Martin is a special player. Ronald Leary is a guy you're thrilled you found, but not a player you're going to overpay, not somebody you're going to cut another starter for, and certainly not somebody you're going to consider franchising.
I completely agree with you fwiw.
And also think they may move on from Collins as well.
The cap isn't going to allow 4 massive OL deals and Dallas has the best OC and RG in football with a top 3 LT.
It would be nice if they could develop and trade those guys to a team that knows how to develop other positions like WR, TE or DE.

It was never about Leary's talent, Leary is clearly better than Collins. The question with Leary? Would his knees hold up. I like Collins but he has to stay on the field in order to improve and if he cant stay healthy we will need a LG because Leary is gone.

LG will not be an issue, we can draft a solid OG in the 3rd from Penn St or Wisconsin if we really had to.

I suspect for Collins to be part of long term solution he has to slot in at RT.
He is obviously going to get 5 years here but I do not see any way he gets a 6th at LG.
As you note a 3rd or 4th can play that spot between TSmith and TFred and make 350K year 1.

Luckily we'll have another year of a cost controlled Collins as he'll be a RFA at the end of the season.

So, we'll have two years to develop a possible replacement for Collins if his asking price goes sky high.

Cool.

My guess is 7.95M per for Leary.
I'd guess 10 but we know that last season is fake money.
Probably depends on which team grabs him.
He has awful good film from last year after some rough outings earlier in his career.

Leary isn't worth 15 million a season.............only probowlers and all pros get paid like that and he is neither.

NYG are going to work out a long term deal with JPP or trade him. That's why they used the non-exclusive transition tag. This not a one-year gambit. And Dallas would be foolish IMO to use the tag on Leary, esp with Collins and Cooper in the fold.
What has Cooper ever done in the NFL?

Per season? Absolutely not.

For one season to keep our strength in tact for a Super Bowl run? If you can afford it..maybe but probably not.

Good thing about the tag is you don't have to worry about dead money or getting into a regrettable long term deal. It's basically a rental.

1. Exclusive vs non-exclusive doesn't matter IF they were to try to trade. If he were exclusive, they'd still be able to work a deal from their end if they wanted. I'm not saying they are or aren't. But 'non-exclusive' doesn't matter.
2. There's no such thing as the transition tag. That went away years ago.
3. Cooper is currently not with the Cowboys and is a FA.

But still, franchising Leary is not a good idea.

there is a transition tag....it gives right of first refusal but no compensation if not matched.....it was 11.9m for OL last year

We have a replacement for Leary. I'd highly suspect it's Collins or Leary not both. Collin's has a small guaranteed contract this year. I don't see Leary staying unless there is something about Collins we don't know.

Both were good prospects, undrafted...only one proved that he can start(I don't care about Collins rookie year he had some great plays and whiffed on some). Whoever gets Leary is going to be lucky, and we are going to be forced to keep Free. That's my opinion.

Leary is gone. This was all part of the plan. We will get a comp pick and that's it.
