If we are holding workout competitions Mays is the man. Otherwise, he is hot garbage. Pass all day at any position. His lateral mobility is absolutely atrocious. He has the turning radius of a Ford Excursion. no. No. NO.

Yeah why not just draft a linebacker lol. I don't understand the point in trying to outbid the Bengals for a safety who can't play safety.

There are no LBs in this draft that run a 4.4. Does sheep mentality hurt? Outbid? Bengals only want him back for vet min, Cowboys just have offer a tad more. We are not talking about the millions guaranteed to Gachkar, who has accomplished absolutely nothing.

Yes and yes.

He can do what Church does only faster. Nickel linebacker and special teams guy. Also like Church, he's suspect in deep coverage.

Signed, Biased USC homer and huge Taylor Mays fan

Serioulsy, I'd love to see a team use him the way the Seachickens use Kam Chancellor.

What do you mean about sheep mentality? In regards to Mays?

And yes you would have to outbid. If the Bengals want him for the vet. minimum that would mean you'd have to give him more than what they offered and that would be overpaying for a guy who doesn't have a position in the NFL.

And ever since when did a 4.4 become the prerequisite to play linebacker in this league? I thought in 2015 we all came to grips with the fact that there is no correlation between 40 times and playing in this league. There are plenty of guys on the street who ran a 4.4 or 4.3 and can't play in the NFL.

Cowboys need someone who can play linebacker. Not a track star. Mays was overhyped coming out of college and has proven that while he's a roided up speed freak athlete he's not a very good football player. The only reason he will even get the vet. minimum is he's still living off his impressive 40 time.

Because a highly touted player has not panned out does not mean he is not a football player. That is simplistic, that is sheep mentality. If it was that simple then how to explain George Selvie, Jason Hatcher, James Harrison, Brian Waters, Todd Christiansen, Jim Plunkett, Rich Gannon, etc. even our own Chuck Howley was considered a bust before he came to the Cowboys. Some players took a while to recover from injuries, some are late bloomers, others are in poor scheme fits or playing the wrong position. Randy White would have been a bust of monumental proportions if Landry continued to play him at MLB. Gary Fencik only excelled when moved from WR to S, Tuinei from DT to OT, on and on.

Taylor Mays is a football player. His father played in the NFL and instilled same work ethic in his son. Mays is not just a weight room junkie, he is also a film room junkie - he watches film all the time. Unfortunately he's been injured or behind some good players for most of his career. He does have stiff hips so lacks fluidity in coverage but his straight line speed and physicality are elite.

Just because he has track speed does not make him just a track guy trying to play football. You are generalizing.

but was a blue chip talent coming out of college.

:laugh::facepalm:

He's another Darnell Bing. Wake up. The guy can't cover, he's not physical/stout enough to play the run and fight off 300+ linemen. The guy's had trouble wrestling receivers and tight ends, what do you think a big Guard is gonna do to the poor kid?

He is what he is. A decent special teamer who can come in on 3rd and long and certain packages, either blitz, cover somebody and so on. Gadget type player. He'll never be a starter. Not at safety, linebacker, anywhere.

Baa-aa. Wrestling WRs or TEs has not been a problem for Mays.

Suuuuuure. Put Witten on him and let's see how much not of a problem it'll be for Mays to fight him off. And I guess everything else he does suck at? Thanks for proving my point.

By the way, why aren't you drooling all over LaRon Landry? Have you seen his biceps? Forget about it. Add all those guys. We'll be all biceps, no brains on defense.

I don't understand the correlation between Mays and the players you named. Even in the draft he fell out of the 1st round. There were question marks about him coming out of school and those same questions if not more have been raised.

Taylor Mays is a safety in this league. This is not Madden where you can just plug and play players anywhere on the field and their rating goes up lol. The guy can't even play safety and for some reason you think he can play linebacker?

Look maybe he'll be the next "George Selvie" though i'd hope the bar would be higher than that but to Selvie's credit he's done far more in this league than Mays has.

But this isn't about Taylor Mays. I just want to know if the Cowboys need a linebacker why on earth wouldn't they just draft one? It just makes no sense lol. If you need a linebacker go and draft one or sign one. Because Taylor Mays isn't it. He's a safety. If that's a "sheep mentality" than so be it.

Reason enough right there to hate the idea all together. :)

That said I actually wasn't even aware that Mays was even still in the league.

He is... barely.

The sad truth is that he's a guy who can run fast in a straight line and not much else.

No. This is the textbook definition of a soft player that is way too into looking at himself in the mirror.
