Take chance on Taylor Mays

OLB. Cowboys need competition at SAM. 6'3 230 4.4 - he's the template for a Marinelli OLB.

Exactly what I thought when I saw the title of the thread. The only reason to bring him in is to see if he wants to play LB.

No. This is the textbook definition of a soft player that is way too into looking at himself in the mirror.

You couldn't be more wrong if you tried. Mays is not soft by any means. Stiff? Sure. Looks for the big hit too much? Yes.

Some of the guys here will type endless posts about no-talents like Jeff Heath, Nick Hayden, Cameron Lawrence, etc, and how Marinelli is a miracle worker. Mays is an extremely fast, physical hitter. Wonder what Marinelli could do with someone like that. The safety blitz possibilities alone are intriguing.

Seriously? He's one of the worst high draft picks in my lifetime. He's got zero game.

Hence, why he's being offered the veteran minimum and nobody is calling to top it.

Rather stick with what we have/draft somewhat proven linebackers over a project in Mays

Maybe as cheap depth, but nothing more. I loved Mays at USC, but he's just not a good player for what the saftey position requires today. He's had some really good coaches and every opportunity to develop, and he hasn't. Pass.

Roy Williams revisited.

Taylor Mays was never ever a blue chip player. He was a kid that played at USC while Carol was there. Then Carol passed over him and drafted a real safety.

So the answer is hell no.

I am advocating we move him to SAM as in OLB, not have him play safety.

So your thinking if he can't wrap his head around 2 + 2 maybe he'll not only figure out 4 + 4, but also beat out the current competition on the roster?

I can see that thinking out of the box is not in your wheelhouse. It's okay, it's not for everyone. And the guy is no longer an option for Marinelli anymore, point is moot. Or as many prefer, mute.

Thinking outside the box is not an issue for me...thinking a guy who didn't develop as a Safety over the last several years of his career will not only pick up the many nuances of linebacker but also do so in a manner that beat's out guy's like Sean Lee/Anthony HItchens is not thinking outside the box...I'm not sure I would even classify it as thinking. That's more like throwing stuff against a wall to see what sticks...which is more a less what team's do when drafting has been an epic failure.

He's a hybrid LB who should be able to cover some, rush, and play the SS role. I don't see a need for him. If you can bring him in on a make good contract, make your decision before game one, AND afford the roster spot then maybe. I think we have enough competition albeit unproven at LB to not take up another roster spot now. Injuries maybe you try him. I'd look for another RB, WR, DL, CB and true S instead of using up a roster spot with him
