Taking you back... Miles Austin

My bad you are correct, we should cut Tony Romo for missing the always wide open Miles Austin.....

Austin has done zip in his NFL career except return kicks because that is what he is in this league, a kick returner/special teams guys. Thats what great athletes without a real position do.

No other positions gets more ridiculous love than our backup, backup WRs.

If we cut Hurd and Austin both today neither would get more than a vet minimum contract. They simply aren't NFL caliber WRs beyond depth as special teams.

The bottom line is the 5 catches in 2 years. Especially considering the ridiculous number of plays Austin got last year at WR because the top 2 guys were out injured and one of them for the entire regular season.

We must upgrade at WR period.

Since when have there been ridiculous love for backup WR? i cant stand Hurd for example. then you come up with stupid comments like im advocating cutting Romo. Fact of the matter is that Miles WAS wide open and he was doing it every game at the end of the season.

Bottomline is that he came out of Monmouth college green as can be and in his second year he started beting people deep and getting MASSIVE seperation. The guy as Parcells would say has bit as a puppy.

I mean you act as if any WR including first round draft picks should come into the league and set the world on fire. The WR position takes the longest to demelop outside of QB. The fact that he came on at the end of his second year is a testament to him not a detraction.

Again no one is saying we shouldnt get another WR and really youre acting like Miles Austin being a good prospect changes that.

Based on your thoughts regarding developmental players, I'd guess you were one of the ones saying we should cut Romo and find an "NFL caliber" QB in the draft.

Like I said earlier in the thread, I think you have to keep rotating projects as quickly as possible when you are in the situation we are in. If we had a 28 year old TG and a 28 year old TO then nobody would mind giving our current crop more time to develope.

The fact of the matter is we have two aging WR's, one of which did not play last year and Hurd nor Austin is ready to step up and Crayton is really no more than a very good #3 and a competent #2 when he is lined up beside Witten and TO.

When Crayton is lined up beside Hurd or Austin we are out of luck.

I really think this thread should be more about getting a replacement for TG because we cannot count on him. If we can find that replacement at #28 then I will be all for it.

Then we can let Hurd, Austin and Stanback fight it out for the next couple of years to see if one of them can replace TO.

I'm hoping Austin can rebound and have a very productive year for us. The guy has the speed, now if he can just learn to hold onto the passes better, and get better at adjusting to the ball, he might turn out to be a real gem for us someday.

We can hope he does anyway.

its not like a guy like Sweed or Hardy is going to come in here and set the world on fire in all liklihood either. im all for hedging your bets with multiple projects though. WR is too important a position in this offense.

I think your wrong. TO i will just talk about him because i don't know how glenn will be after that injury. TO may be aging but i think he still has 3 or 4 years left in him he is a work out freak. Learned under Jerry Rice and everyone saw how long jerry played for. If TO was showing signs of age then i would agree with you but he isn't and doesn't show any signs of slowing down.

Well, you are kind of splitting hairs there because I said he has 2 more years and you say he has 3-4. Either way Hurd, Austin and Stanback have time to develope under that scenario - 2 of which would be gone by then (3-4 years) anyway.

y.a.w.n.

Wake me up when you have a point.
When Tony Romo went into the games he played well. As soon as he played people took notice. Romo doesn't have much more game experience ironically than Austin yet he has 2 Pro Bowls to his credit.

Austin runs rounded off routes or runs routes then stops to look back at the ball. He drops passes. He just doesn't have WR skills period.

The team does like him... as a special teams guy. He has a place here but like the 10000000000000000 other developmental guys before him he isn't a starting caliber player and you do not just pick up WR sklills anymore than a 4.6 guy becomes a 4.2 guy.

I really do hate to interrupt this love-fest but the bottom line is these guys are not all that beloved by the Cowboys organization. That is why we re-signed the athletically challenged Patrick Crayton and we are flirting with the 30+ and injured Javon Walker as well as talking extension with T.O.

But you can keep all this up when these guys are both bubble guys at the end of training camp. My advice is do not go invest in their jerseys.

Did you forget the games we played without TO? That told you everything you need to know about the depth at WR. Hurd doesn’t have the speed and Austin doesn’t have the hands.

And a lot of people don't have the sense to appreciate what they've got.

:)

When you run a comeback or curl you are supposed to look back for the ball and those rounded posts, slants and flags he was getting wide open on sure didnt look rounded to me.

Whats really sad here is that you dont understand Romo's 50 to 60 snaps a game does not equate to the same game experience that Austin got in his 4 snaps a game for the last 6 games of the 2007 season. Lets also lets not forget that Romo got the benefit of three years of practice before he saw the field.

Also how on earth can you say the team only likes him as a ST guy when they are giving him snaps on offense and throwing the ball to him.

And what exactly are these WR skills that you are talking about. You keep mentioning them but all i see is a guy that got open consistently with limited snaps for week after week after week. if that constitutes no skills then ill take that every day and twice on Sundays.

Hell yeah...that Buffalo game tomorrow night is huge too. I think I'm going to try and make the Penguins game sunday afternoon, especially now that Crosby is back.

It's easy to say it was obvious Romo had tons of talent now that he's performed well in the league. He certainly did look like he had lots of potential, but it was also very clear that he was raw. Same could be said for Austin and Stanback. I remember people being so certain that Romo would never be a starter in the NFL.

That's actually a pretty good idea. My sister is gonna be visiting me, and I was trying to think of something cool to do on the weekend. It's a bit of a trip, but it would be worth it - she needs to appreciate hockey.

What Ovechkin is doing out there is absurd. He's just unreal going to the net.
