Guyton was expected to have a bumpy season. He was the 8th OT taken.

Beebe has been more than fine. He is playing better than our previous center.

The trade down to acquire those two was an excellent move. Both will be much better next season.
Guyton is a RT, not LT I really don’t know why they figured that he could play LT, after only 70 snaps at that position in college, which he had 1.011 snaps as RT for TCU! TCU gave him a scholarship coming out of high school for his play as a DT here at a local high school in our area Manor High.
Beebe had been very good, Martin has not been good I have said he’s mentally retired already, he wanted to retire after last season.
Steele is not good, Hoffman and Bass should have been starting

1. Will McClay is not a shadow GM. Not in any universe.

2. The scouts are often overruled by Jerry's gut or the coaches on staff. McClay simply builds the board and does some of his most inspired work in later rounds when Jerry loses interest or doesn't know what's going on.

3. The franchise doesn't really have a true philosophy or true vision when it comes to the kinds of players they need to give them the best chance to win. We frequently spend draft capital overcorrecting on previously made bad decisions or taking flyers on head cases or oft injured players.

It's almost like an 82 year old billionaire that doesn't watch film and his no talent success story son shouldn't be running pro football personnel.

What is the criteria here for "picks?" Pro-bowl/All-Pro? If that's the standard, then getting 1 or two every year is pretty good.
If you're talking solid players, then there are more than 1 or 2 (except 2021 which is pretty bad).

Sam Williams has shown promise at times.
Tolbert has improved every year.
Ferguson is a solid TE.
Then you have two All-Pros in Smith and Bland.
That's pretty good for 2022.

2020 had two all-pros in Lamb and Diggs. And Biadasz who was solid and made the pro-bowl. You would love to get that from every draft.

2021 had one hall of fame type player, an okay DT in Osi, but the rest was garbage.

So, in 3 years, you have four all-pros, another pro-bowler, and several solid starters/depth guys.
That's pretty good actually.
2023 on the other hand is looking not great so far, except maybe Overshown.

And that was done without drafting at the top. They have a shot to do really well this year drafting at the top. Trade down and draft Mason Graham or Kenneth Grant or Ashton Jeanty and then grab some more talent at the top of the 2nd and top of the 3rd.

I know this is not really a new topic, but as I’m watching college football, I can’t help but realize that I was fooled. I see great players that I know we won’t draft.

I was one who thought Will McClay, being a shadow GM, was doing a great job. At least 2022 and before.

Now, it seems obvious that we’ve lost our way from an organizational perspective and our scouting is no longer viable.

Before they had to offset the crazy and McClays team had been somewhere able to resist the stupidity of Stephen and Jerry, but I’ve lost what faith I had.

We had two picks in 2022, one in 2021 and two in 2020.

Pretty crappy overall.

It just feels bad that what was the one thing we all tried to say “but we draft well …” is now an outdated opinion.
There is a difference between evaluating well and drafting well.

McClay wasn't the one who was constantly reaching and sacrificing draft value.

Jerry doesn't believe in BPA (best player available). Sometimes he doesn't even believe in positioning through trades to draft a specific player where he is slotted according to his value.

Quite often, Jerry drafts according to player position.

For example, he didn't get one of the CB's he wanted in the first round of the 2021 draft so he reached for Kelvin Joseph in eh 2nd round.

After the 2022 season, the Cowboys needed some improvement at the DT position. Mazi was probably valued around the top of the 2nd round but Jerry took him.

The same was true for the 2nd round of the 2022 draft. The Cowboys wanted another TE and it was a TE-rich draft. However, when they started getting picked in rapid succession, Jerry panicked and reached for Schoonmaker.

When the Cowboys draft for need they draft poorly. It is fortunate for them that when they have to settle on BPA at times, they find teh most success.

Jerry didn't want Zack Martin, initially, he deeply regrated not taking Johnny Manziel. When Jerry couldn't get one of the top two CBs in the first round of 2021, he "settled" for Micah Parsons.

When Jerry tried, unsuccessfully, to move up in the 2016 draft to get Paxton Lynch, he went with the best value in the 4th round, Dak Prescott.

McClay provides the information and recommendations, but it is Jerry who decided whether or not to use it and, quite often, he chooses not to.

Geez. One bad season, ravaged by injuries at that, and you guys are all jumping off cliffs.
You didn’t watch the front office do absolutely nothing in the offseason? This is much more than one bad season, they took a team ready to take the next step for the first time in a long time and killed it themselves! Jerry and his kid are a joke. Nothing more!

The Cowboys will do very well picking at the top of the draft. Are you going to complain when they pick Mason Graham, Tet McMillan, or Ashton Jeanty?
I don’t think the cowboys can miss this year at least in round 1 the needs are many and where they will pick there will be talent

Problem is nothing satisfies this fanbase so we’d find ways to complain even if we hit

There is merit to the discussion that the last 2 drafts are underwhelming

That 2023 draft was terrible and its going to haunt the organization for a while. 2024 isn't off to a great start either.

McClay and the personnel department have certainly missed on more than they’ve hit the last few drafts.

Let’s hope they don’t screw up this upcoming high draft pick.
They will.................. it's just their nature.
They are about to waste more talent trying to make our offense like it was in 2016.

Guyton and Beebe have been disappointing after being thrust into starting roles. Kneeland got hurt. Liufau was hype.

Mazi makes the same mistakes over and over again and struggles to develop at all.

Talent acquisition is what it is.

Not filling holes in VFA is just icing on the cake.
The truth is most free agents do not turn out to be as good as you thought they would be. Some do. But chances are the free agents you sign, while expensive, will be an upgrade over what you had. The Cowboys do not upgrade in free agency so every when they get a good team, it deteriorates every year unless they pull of a great draft. And, btw, just because you draft 7 guys and 6 of them play for Dallas doesn't mean it was a good draft. They could all be JAGs but Dallas has no one else.

Contain your hate for Jerry. This thread was talking about McClay, not the FO in general.
