11 starters on both sides of the ball. On one side you have this breakdown.

5 - 1st round picks
1 - 2nd round pick
3 - 4th round picks
1 - 5th round pick
1 - 7th round pick

The top backups for these 11 positions consist of the following breakdown.

4 - 1st round picks
2 - 2nd round picks
1 - 3rd round pick
1 - 5th round pick
1 - 6th round pick
2 - undrafted free agents

Then on the other side of the ball you have this breakdown.

2 - 1st round picks
2 - 2nd round picks
2 - 3rd round picks
1 - 4th round pick
1 - 6th round pick
2 - 7th round picks
1 - undrafted free agent

The top backups for these 11 positions consist of the following breakdown.

1 - 1st round pick
1 - 2nd round pick
1 - 3rd round pick
2 - 4th round picks
1 - 6th round pick
1 - 7th round pick
1 - 9th round pick
3 - undrafted free agents

Which one of those lists would you expect the most production out of?

Me too.

What if I told you the 2 starting 1st round picks on the Offensive side of the ball weren't even our Draft picks?

Here's the breakdown position by position with top backup (for now) included.

LDE...Spears, 1st...Hatcher, 3rd
NT...Ratliff, 7th...Johnson, 2nd
RDE...Canty, 4th...Bowen, udfa
SOLB...Ellis, 1st...Spencer, 1st
LILB...Thomas, 5th...Carpenter, 1st
RILB...James, 4th...Burnett, 2nd
WOLB...Ware, 1st...Rogers, udfa
LCB...Newman, 1st...Jones, 1st
SS...Williams, 1st...Everett, udfa
FS...Hamlin, 2nd...Watkins, 5th
RCB...Henry, 4th...Jenkins, 1st

WR...Crayton, 7th...Hurd, udfa
LT...Adams, 2nd...Free, 4th
LG...Kosier, 7th...McQuistan, 7th
C...Gurode, 2nd...Berger, 6th
RG...Davis, 1st...Proctor, udfa
RT...Columbo, 1st...Marten, 3rd
TE...Witten, 3rd...Bennett, 2nd
WR...Owens, 3rd...Stanback, 4th
FB...Anderson, 6th...Cruz, udfa
RB...Barber, 4th...Jones, 1st
QB...Romo, udfa...Johnson, 9th

There's no excuse for this Defense not to be great. None at all.

The Offense already is.

If throwing a lot of high draft picks at a position or side of the ball was a guarantee of greatness, the Lions would have the best WR group ever assembled.

I've thought the same thing for much of the season. Some smart FA signings (particularly Davis, Colombo, TO & even Kosier), good draft picks (particularly Gurode, Adams, Witten, MBIII & 7th rounder Crayton) & an outstanding undrafted rookie signing (Romo) made this offense one of the top in the NFL. All this happened while we've used numerous high picks on our defense going back quite a few years. Heck, drafting RB Felix Jones in the first round was the first time we drafted an offensive player since maybe TE David LaFleur. I still remain disappointed that the Cowboys didn't believe any of the WRs drafted this year could help the Cowboys & don't buy their arguement none could help us this year/that Hurd/Austin/Stanback were better at this point. Given how we focused on our CB & RB situations by loading up with 2 players at each position, I certainly expect/hope we address the WR position in the same way in 09 or sign at least 1 quality vet WR. I cite our lack of a quality #2 WR opposite TO as our biggest weakness. If we had a legit #2, we could survive if we lost TO for a little while. W/o a #2, we've got to rely on Witten (who opponents will quickly try taking out of the game) & Crayton, Hurd, Austin & Stanback--unless Glenn comes back for a very successful year but pessimistic that will happen.

You are correct Hos, the DEFENSE has only one excuse this year:

NONE!

What about Terry Glenn?
I didn't include him since there's no guarantee yet that he will even be here.

Exactly... By that line of thinking, Mike Williams must be better than Terrell Owens... Or Matt Leinart better than Tony Romo.

So since you cite the Lions as the example of throwing a lot of first round picks at so many WRs, I assume you want of those posters who don't want to use at least 1 high pick to somehow get a Lion WR, specifically RWilliams. Hmm. Seems to me most of us have some questions about first rounders Marcus Spears & Bobby Carpenter's value to the Cowboys. Heck, maybe we can trade both Spears & Carpenter to the Lions for WR RWilliams.

I never said that at all. I asked what you would expect. Are you honestly going to sit there and tell me you expected Tom Brady to be the best QB in the NFL?

I figured that was the reason. Just wanted some clarification.

Anyways, great original post. I agree, we have a lot of talent, hopefully they'll play to their potential. Like you said, no excuses.

Why not trade them for high draft picks and develop players already here? Protect the future?

I have no objection to acquiring Detroit's Roy Williams unless it scotches the growth of a player who can be even better than he is --- which could be the case. Besides, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

And the offense ain't broke.

We should the kind of defense that when our offense gives up the ball or needs the ball back.... OUR DEFENSE should be the type that can go out there and force that quick 3 and out... via pressure their offense to be off balance and intimidated.

Pacman gets an INT.... runs to the sidelines and hands the ball to Tony.... ok we need 7 go get it!

yeah baby.... damn when does season start lol

The second sentence about Brady seems counter to your original post that the unit with more higher-drafted players should be expected to be better...

Or am I missing something.

The line in bold above from the original post.

Expectations. The point of the whole thing.

Maybe people do expect more out of first rounders, but that doesn't mean it's right to do so -- especially when you're talking about proven vets like Flo, T.O., Barber, Romo, Gurode, etc.

Off topic first. Your post count as of this response is 11,111. Don't know why that struck me.

I will forever curb all expectations since it is wrong to have them. Please disregard this thread as the rantings of a man uneducated in the proper protocol of expectations. I simply did not know better.

Seriously, I was expecting a thread about one of our players having some really serious surgical procedure. Whew!
