They aren't gods. They just play good football and make smart decisions, most of the time. Trying to emulate some of the successful things they do is not a bad strategy.

Sure, but a lot of what they do works because of those guys, which is the point. It's hard to compare ANY team to them.

Can they take the franchise of him if they agree to a deal before the season starts?

They have until July 15th to get a long term deal done or he has to play under the tag for the season. If they get a deal signed before then, the tag immediately drops off and any cap space the new deal takes up is immediately applied to the cap. Probably around 6m in cap space gained if he is signed.

If Dallas doesn't get a deal done by end of March, I don't think there is really alot of incentive to unfranchise him in '15 because the FA pool will be mostly dried up and there would be no point in freeing up some of $13 million owed to Dez. They could essentially punt until next season with Dez contract.

If nothing else it pleases Dez and that cap $ it frees up could be carried into the season to start working on a Crawford extension or rolled over into next year. For example no deal cap hit 13m this year. Next year even if he signs is going to be around 6-7m cap hit year 1 so 20m cap hit first 2 years. If signs before July 15th its 6-7m this year and close to the same next for 14m hit first 2 years. So it would net you 6-8m in space at minimum to use while Romo is still around. An added bonus is you start the deal sooner so it is one more season in his prime the deal is set in.

In other words it's a pretty big deal if they plan on keeping Dez after this year.

Pretty much. If they want to keep him as they have said they need to get that deal done. If they plan to tag him twice and let him test FA its not a big deal. Its better to sign a 26 year old to a 7 year 40m+ deal than a 28 year old to the same deal lol.
