Tannenbaum's GM Mock 3/28/23

So you guys are just going to ignore Hendon Hooker 5th overall?
It wouldn’t totally shock me. If anyone listens to Sirius/XM NFL Radio, Kirwan and Miller have Hooker in the 1st r. And Kirwan is besties with Pete Carroll.

Yeah, I would agree. Mayer isn’t a bad prospect. I think he’s a classic high floor/low ceiling guy. If Parcells was here and still calling shots he’d likely be out target.
Fortunately we’re well covered via FA and don’t really have a glaring weakness heading into the draft assuming we resign Hanks.

Mayer is my #1 TE, but you couldn't go wrong with Smith or Banks as well. This would be an ideal scenario for the Cowboys. Don't see some of those guys ahead of us though, Hooker in the top 10? Heard might go to Vikings, but not in the top 10.
I’d have to take the special athlete in Nolan Smith over the solid TE in Mayer, with the confidence that Dan Quinn can coach him to his full potential.

I’d be meh on Mayer - consensus 1st rounder on most boards but smaller than expected at the combine and ran good, not great.

That being said, he’s polished and a well rounded player that I think has a very high floor.
Nobody expected him to run great. That’s not his game. He’s witten 2.0

That’s influenced my draft thinking quite a bit, to the point that I’ve come around on the possibility of TE at #26.

Solid TE prospect is underselling Mayer
I don’t mean to do that. I just wanted to acknowledge Smith’s uncommon traits.

Was it you I was debating with about the 1st round TE?

I don’t know why people keep comparing him to Witten. Witten was bigger, longer, heavier and faster as a prospect.

Hayden Hurst is probably a better comp from a size and athletic profile.

I don’t love TEs in the 1st round, but it feels like we’re going in a win now mode which makes it a little easier for me.

If the medicals check out and someone like Kincaid falls, who is a consensus 1st rounder, I think he adds another weapon to the offense we don’t have. Hope he works out before the draft.

Size and athleticism isn’t everything. That’s why

I wasn’t big on 1st round TE either but if you can add a great one that’s ready to go to our current offense, I can’t argue with it.

I haven't seen many of the other TEs in the draft, but I have seen the Notre Dame TE, he was basically their offense.

Reminds me of a young Gronk.

Sounds like you two need to come to blows. You can't always settle it with words.

So what’s the comp from then? Bc it isn’t size, length, speed or play style.

Witten was more of a bigger, longer linear athlete with build up speed.

Mayer is smaller, that wins more with quick feet than long speed.

I did a follow the money post last week, both rusher/corner would be better for their future cap allocations as the need to clear money off their books for several big extensions starting next offseason. Mayer probably gives you the most immediate impact, but plays at a low value position, think it would be a toss up from the other two as both tested elite at their respective positions.

Yes. Witten won based on long speed. The ultimate deep threat.
