Regardless of what you think about the money spent on the 2 OGs we signed, it should interest you to know that we only failed to sign one player we targeted in Free Agency according to Mickey and Bill Jones. Of course, that player was Kellen Davis the TE in Chicago who would replace Martellus Bennett here.

The other consideration is simply the price paid league wide. We all wanted Laurent Robinson back, but at that price? Sayonora and domo as far far as I am concerned. Getting Mario Williams would have been great, but no way he deserves more than Ware, especially in a city where Ware has already earned our respect.

That's one of the caveats of Free Agency that is such a wild card. The cost. I personally would have rather used the money we spent on both Guards for Grubbs or Nicks. But I felt the same way in 2006 when we got Kosier. In him the team saw something I didn't. I ate crow. I hope I do again. Maybe we've grabbed Bernadeau and Livings at the point in their careers that they have epiphanies on their play.

Not going to hold my breath on that mind you and I still want David DeCastro more than any player in the Draft by a wide margin. I still want Peter Konz or Phillip Blake too.

Any more I pretty much see Free Agency as a contingency plan more than I do anything else. I think Bernadeau and Livings are merely better options at this point than oft injured Holland, Kosier, and Dockery due to their ages.

It is the failure to address Center that perplexes me most. Unless as some speculate Bernadeau is going to be that guy. If he is, fine. I would still prefer the 2 college kids be drafted. I don't see the draft as a contingency plan, I see it as a structure plan. I'd prefer to structure our future around Tyron Smith, David DeCastro, and Peter Konz.

To me that 3 player improvement over Gurode, Colombo, and Davis would be like Jessica Alba vs. Janet Reno in a bikini contest. You go from three aging players to three whose ceiling isn't even seen yet because the stairs to the top are still curving.

Youth and speed. That was what Jimmy did when he got here. I don't know about anyone else, but I will confess I thought he was nuts at first. In 1992 we were the youngest team in the NFL with an average age right around 26. Per Denim Chicken that's right around where we are now, but that will go younger after the Draft and pare downs to 53. I am fine with this. it gives me some hope that we will be fast, athletic, and most importantly hungry.

Now, just make sure we are also talented. I don't like very many of the DL options in front of us right now. I feel like we can do too much in the Secondary and mess things up a little. But Offense is where I feel we have to focus.

If you read percyhoward's thread about our red zone ineptness due to running, you have to join me in concern. This is why I like the Lawrence Vickers signing most of all so far. It gives us a shot in the arm at a healthy FB for a long haul. I loved Fiammetta, but the injury bug biting him was a concern and I have no faith in Chapas. Maybe it is my pet cat Henry Hynoski getting a Super Bowl ring that fuels that.

The point is opening holes is paramount to any success in 2012. I don't care what we paid Livings and Bernabeau, if they can open holes for Murray to follow Vickers, we got better at a crucial area. The question is, can they? Can they also pass block well enough to keep Tony Romo upright and not afraid to cough?

That is where the Kyle Orton signing may be the unheralded coup of the off season so far. I remember Steve Beuerlein filling in for Troy Aikman and basically saving the 1991 season for us. I hope Kyle doesn't have to, but I believe in him enough that he could.

When it comes down to bare bones one thing describes this off season above all else. Past prime versus approaching prime.

Anybody else counting down the days to learning something about our schedule? 4 to 6 more and we get to speculate on wins and losses before we turn our attention again to the incoming rookies. I want that Wednesday Night opener in New York against the Giants. I want it bad.

AMEN Hos! great post as usual

i am totally on board on Philip Blake. i guess it's from all the hints since around the combine that we were interested in him but i just get the feeling that he is almost a guaranteed draft pick for us in the 3rd or 4th round.

of course now that i say that it probably doesn't happen.

now lets assume for a second that they end up picking Decastro and either Konz/Blake.....that gives us a lot of offensive linemen, and obviously means we'll be trimming the fat (literally and figuratively) who is on the chopping block in your opinion were that to happen?

Costa, Kowalski, Nagy, Livings, Bernabeau, Pernell, and Arkin would be all in danger. Obviously one of those guys is a starter with Free, Smith, DeCastro, and say Blake. I'll say Bernabeau is for the sake of this. I think Pernell is safest of the 6 remaining. From there you look at price to release and flexibility. That makes Livings and Nagy safe probably. I think they'd try to put Kowalski on the PS, and keep Arkin.

Smith, DeCastro, Blake, Bernabeau, Free
Pernell, Livings, Nagy, Arkin

Arkin and Bernebeau have both been talked about as possible RT fill in substitutions.

I really like Davis the TE: VERY physical blocker at the point of attack for Forte in the games I saw last season. They got smart and ponied up in the end. What now for tight end boys? I assume draft as the FA tight ends aren't much to pick from at this point.

Actually, Bernie Kossier came into a playoff game during the Super Bowl XXVIII rum (or was that SB XXX?). Aikman went down. Kosar came in and won the game. He's always the forgotten Cowboy QB who has earned a SB ring.

Many great thoughts offered and points made, Hos. Youth and Speed Part Deux, then? The Livings signing notwithstanding, it sure looks to be the overriding intention of the powers that be at Valley Ranch.

Next year's schedule, even with a young, improved team, screams 8-8 or 9-7 on paper.

To perform better than that is going to require that we win every single game that we're supposed to win, and then we'll also have to pull out another 2-3 wins against teams that were better than we were this past season.

The Dallas Cowboys need to be a little more consistent on offense, a whole lot better on defense, especially in the fourth quarter, and not give back anything on special teams; plus, our coaching and game plans need to be stepped up a notch.

This won't be an easy schedule to just add a few pieces and make the playoffs; we need to improve our play even from the returning players and coaches.

Yeah, it is definitely down to the Draft for TE.

One thing I will say on TE though. martin Rucker, who filled in for us in the past. Has taken up yoga this off season to prepare. I always find that kind of stuff interesting. Traces all the way back to my fascination with Randy White and martial arts then Herschel Walker and ballet then bobsled.

I actually meant saving the 1991 season. I should have made that clearer.

When you mentioned Janet Reno in a bikini, I think I threw up in my mouth a little! Sheesh!

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of a Decastro in round 1. A guy that gives you the best bet to solidifi a position like that (especially with Romo beat up last couple of years) seems like a very wise choice. In some ways it isn't a "sexy" pick that Jerry likes, but it is a "safe" pick, getting the best guy at a position in the draft, widely thought so, by a large margin. We can't afford misses in the early rounds if we want to compete for/in playoffs over next 2 seasons. Other teams can afford to miss or to draft more "projects" but the Cowboys can't if they want to compete NOW.

We add a potential 7-10 year starter on the oline. That helps the QB, helps the running game, and gives the WR's an extra milisecond to get open too.

There are a lot more questions with the olb'ers and DLinemen that show up on Mock drafts for the 1st round, at least from what I read. There seems to be no controversy over who the best Guard would be.

No it doesn't. I can't even respect premature evaluations like this that are bred from frustration not fact.

Well, I do wonder about Bernadeau at center, and if he can really play the position. There are issues with both Konz (health) and Blake (age), and if we did take DeCastro, I would almost rather take a Brooks in the 3rd than either of those centers. Course thats if the FO wants to take 2 OL that high.

You made me think of Janet Reno in a bikini! I threw up in my mouth. Thanks a lot.

I like the idea of a Rucker return and I also like the yoga mention.

Personally, I think that's a key exercise component not effectively utilized by NFL teams and players. (I love Witten but I think he could benefit from the added flexibility that yoga would give him)

You've got some problems Hossy...
Good post, by the way.

DeCastro is a no-brainer to me. If we can actually start running the ball with consistency, that helps the DEFENSE as well by keeping them off the field.

Great post, btw!

IMO, to make it easier to pick 2 OL relatively high, I hope we can get either a 3rd WR or a TE in FA and 1 more CB for depth purposes.

Unfortunately the potential Davis signing at TE fell through.

I think it will be easier to find a 3rd wideout in FA, however.

It's going to be challenging getting DeCastro, OC, WR, TE, plus at least 1 CB, 1 ILB, possibly another pass rusher and Safety all in 1 draft.

But by getting a reasonable 3 WR and depth at CB in FA (1 more CB), we can really open up the Draft.

I wonder if Radway could bulk up a little and be a pass catching TE, like Gronk or Hernadez?

Yeah even with our huge FA haul, we still have too many holes to fill in the draft cause the most I would expect us to get in any draft as an immediate starters is 3 guys.

The 8 holes you listed and 3 guys don't really match up too well, we will have to use our resources as effectively as possible at this point.
