Regardless of what you think about the money spent on the 2 OGs we signed, it should interest you to know that we only failed to sign one player we targeted in Free Agency according to Mickey and Bill Jones. Of course, that player was Kellen Davis the TE in Chicago who would replace Martellus Bennett here.
The other consideration is simply the price paid league wide. We all wanted Laurent Robinson back, but at that price? Sayonora and domo as far far as I am concerned. Getting Mario Williams would have been great, but no way he deserves more than Ware, especially in a city where Ware has already earned our respect.
That's one of the caveats of Free Agency that is such a wild card. The cost. I personally would have rather used the money we spent on both Guards for Grubbs or Nicks. But I felt the same way in 2006 when we got Kosier. In him the team saw something I didn't. I ate crow. I hope I do again. Maybe we've grabbed Bernadeau and Livings at the point in their careers that they have epiphanies on their play.
Not going to hold my breath on that mind you and I still want David DeCastro more than any player in the Draft by a wide margin. I still want Peter Konz or Phillip Blake too.
Any more I pretty much see Free Agency as a contingency plan more than I do anything else. I think Bernadeau and Livings are merely better options at this point than oft injured Holland, Kosier, and Dockery due to their ages.
It is the failure to address Center that perplexes me most. Unless as some speculate Bernadeau is going to be that guy. If he is, fine. I would still prefer the 2 college kids be drafted. I don't see the draft as a contingency plan, I see it as a structure plan. I'd prefer to structure our future around Tyron Smith, David DeCastro, and Peter Konz.
To me that 3 player improvement over Gurode, Colombo, and Davis would be like Jessica Alba vs. Janet Reno in a bikini contest. You go from three aging players to three whose ceiling isn't even seen yet because the stairs to the top are still curving.
Youth and speed. That was what Jimmy did when he got here. I don't know about anyone else, but I will confess I thought he was nuts at first. In 1992 we were the youngest team in the NFL with an average age right around 26. Per Denim Chicken that's right around where we are now, but that will go younger after the Draft and pare downs to 53. I am fine with this. it gives me some hope that we will be fast, athletic, and most importantly hungry.
Now, just make sure we are also talented. I don't like very many of the DL options in front of us right now. I feel like we can do too much in the Secondary and mess things up a little. But Offense is where I feel we have to focus.
If you read percyhoward's thread about our red zone ineptness due to running, you have to join me in concern. This is why I like the Lawrence Vickers signing most of all so far. It gives us a shot in the arm at a healthy FB for a long haul. I loved Fiammetta, but the injury bug biting him was a concern and I have no faith in Chapas. Maybe it is my pet cat Henry Hynoski getting a Super Bowl ring that fuels that.
The point is opening holes is paramount to any success in 2012. I don't care what we paid Livings and Bernabeau, if they can open holes for Murray to follow Vickers, we got better at a crucial area. The question is, can they? Can they also pass block well enough to keep Tony Romo upright and not afraid to cough?
That is where the Kyle Orton signing may be the unheralded coup of the off season so far. I remember Steve Beuerlein filling in for Troy Aikman and basically saving the 1991 season for us. I hope Kyle doesn't have to, but I believe in him enough that he could.
When it comes down to bare bones one thing describes this off season above all else. Past prime versus approaching prime.
Anybody else counting down the days to learning something about our schedule? 4 to 6 more and we get to speculate on wins and losses before we turn our attention again to the incoming rookies. I want that Wednesday Night opener in New York against the Giants. I want it bad.
