While I've heard and read about his blocking prowess, that’s great asset.
But frankly, I am far more interest in his receiving skills that impacts the passing game.

- There would have to be something exceptional , something special - about Schoon's receiving skills that warrants drafting him
as high as the 2nd round.

- Despite playing for a well-known ex-NFL coach in Jim Harbaugh, maybe Schoon was not in a scheme that best emphasized and stood out his receiving skills.
I fully admit that I have full Mark Andrews/ George Kettle aspirations and expectations for Schoon.
Drafted in the 2nd round … he had better at least be like Philly TE Dallas Goedert, imo.
I was more than ready to ride with the rookies from last year. Didn't like the 2nd round pick for TE.
But ... maybe they didn't think we particularly *needed* a TE, but just thought that Schoon's RAS made him the BPA. We do weight physical freakiness more than other teams.

And you don't draft a DT RD#1 for their run stopping--except we did.

MM is looking to run the ball and stop the run. That was the emphasis of this draft and why they made the Shoonmaker pick. It also doesn't hurt that he was the #1 TE in getting separation--something that hampered the QB last year with the pass catchers.
We got a NT RD#1 to stop the run. That's a big piece if he's good.
DLaw only played 60% snaps. We rotate our dlinemen a lot because the roles required in our multifront defense vary a lot.

The guys to spend RD#1 on for our defense?
A LB who can play off the ball on run downs, and then play edge on pass downs.
And there's Micah.
Then a difference making NT.
And there's Mazi.

Don't think I'd be competing for a 1st round 4-3 DE anymore. They're just more valuable on other teams who need that player on more snaps.

Training camp? I dont give 1 damn about training camp. Ive seen plenty of training camp videos and a players praises being sung. Sunday is what I want to see.
The point is training camp comes first and is the first glimpse into how a guy is doing. Then comes preseason games and THEN Sundays

It’s one of your biggest issues? They draft well lol. Is it because they don’t draft the guy you want?
100%. They draft ok but seem to always leave a lot of meat on the bone IMO.

I don’t really have guys I want in the draft. I just want the team to draft the best players available and be smart in relation to roster management.

I said all along I saw no reason to take a TE early in this draft because of Ferg and Hendershot. Shultz was a terrible blocker but was a great receiving threat. His production would have to be replaced but I assumed they'd do it through another WR and RBs out of the back field. Like a true west coast offense does.
He does have good blocking skills, probably better than Ferg, and definitely better than Payton. But he's no where near the pass catcher of Dalton. He may have the traits to improve in that area but time will tell. TBH, IMHO, he was a desperation reach because they watched all the others get taken before them. I would have gone another direction.

I def wanted us to draft a TE since the class was so strong, but yea, def felt like a desperation reach bc they were bent on taking one early.

Schoonmaker pick is a head scratcher but they chose him because he’s an elite blocker and his testing shows he has high upside in the receiving department.

Imo, he’s a very fluid athlete and he’s great and finding windows and just runs very smooth.

What I don’t like is once he catches the ball it’s like all that athleticism disappears and he just falls to the ground or goes down super easy.
This is facts. We have a good TE coach and we feel like he can turn Luke into something. I also agree that the athleticism doesn't look great after the catch. But maybe that's changeable.

One thing I will say about his RAC is Kincaid and Musgrave were not any better in that department.

LaPorta was head and shoulders the best in the TE class at run after catch.

TE was an obvious pick. In spite of your rosy evaluation of our TE's, the Cowboys and the rest of the NFL apparently disagree. The Bills were so sure we needed a TE that they jumped in front of us in round 1. The only surprise here was that the cowboys waited around until their selection in round 2 and didn't move up for Mayer or La Porta.

How do you know they didn’t draft the best players?

Glad they didn't end up going TE in the first round, which always felt a little rich since we had two promising TE's on the roster. Using a 2nd or 3rd round pick seemed like the more appropriate level of investment.

I like the fact that they now have three promising young TEs early in their rookie contracts with probably less of a hit on the salary cap combined than if they had kept Schultz.

I’m basing it off the consensus of where most draft analysts had the player ranked pre draft as a prospect.
Yeah but don’t you think it’s a bit flawed to do that? They analyze the draft they don’t actually interview these players or discuss fit. According to them Bijan was the best player in the draft but should go into the 20s.

Once the fit and person are evaluated by the team no.

There is correlation to our best picks being players taken later than they should’ve according to those rankings.

By the end of camp, Schoonmaker will be #1TE and Ferguson 2

Do you think fans known more than coaches or scouts?
You said “scouts”, and didn’t say they “know as much”, I just said a lot of fans are as good at picking talent as the scouts based on draft results
