I don't have the inclination for an exhaustive analysis but from time to time I like the rank the roster position by position starters and major contributors. The notion here is what to do moving forward not to dwell on what went wrong so if players are expected back next year they are listed.

Offense

QB1 Romo
OC Frederick
LOT Smith
ROG Martin
TE1 Witten
WR1 Bryant
LOG Collins
WR3 Beasley
WR2 TWill
RB1 DMC
WR4 Whitehead
RB2 Turbin
FB Clutts
TE2 Escobar
TE3 Hanna
ROT Free
SwingOT: Green
WR5 Street
QB2 Cassel

We need to upgrade in order: QB2, RB1, WR2, and backup linemen. Green and Lucky need more playing time tonight. If you have 3 RB active start giving other guys carries too.

Defense

WLB Lee
CB1 Scandrick
CB2 Jones
LDE DLaw
UT1 Crawford
RDE Gregory
UT2 Crawford
UT3 Irvin
CB3 Carr
SS Church
MLB Hitchens
LB Smith
LB WIlson
SS Wilcox
Slot Mitchell

Huge state of flux at LB and the secondary. If Claiborne is retained and Carr takes a pay cut that may be best case and we can move the rookie to FS. Carr and Claiborne both leave then we are still in dire need of at least one corner and then either a S or CB just to play nickel and base.

Needs: Gaping holes: NT, SAM, FS Need depth: DE LB

So overall we have gaping holes at FS NT RB1 QB2 SAM. WR2 maybe
we need better depth at WR DE LB OL RB secondary

This team is nowhere close.

They need QB2 and three. Counting on Romo to play a full schedule going forward is like counting on McFadden to do the same, foolish. They need to draft one and sign one, The whole back seven on defense needs multiple upgrades too. Cant count on Lee or McClain, Church is a first down waiting to happen, Wilcox is a failed project.

It all comes down to how we get this secondary patched up. I still think our D-Line is coming along quite fine, I like was I'm seeing from Lawrence, Crawford is looking to be a good sign, and I believe Hardy should be resigned. I think Gregory is suitable as a pass rush specialist in this league. I do think priority needs to be made to get an RB in this draft and I don't mind us taking a look at WR2.

My worry is still the linebacker and secondary. At this point, I'm hoping we get Claiborne back and get one of the top CB/safety prospects in the draft.

Agree with your assessment. Lucky would be a great WR in NE the way their offensive scheme is run and Brady uses them. He is gaining confidence in his KR abilities as well. If he was ever let go, would not shock me if Belicheat grabbed him pronto the way he did with Amendola.

There are a lot of holes to fill, but the UNIT that worries me most is the secondary. Claiborne, Carr, Wilcox and Church are weaknesses. Especially the safeties.

"Church is a first down waiting to happen" made me laugh out loud.

Every team has needs if you look at their roster closely

Sure but glaring holes at skill positions are the worst kinds of holes you can have. QB WR and RB in particular. Plus there is a difference between a hole at a position and having players like Wilcox, Church, Hayden, DMC, Free, Street, and Cassel playing 40 or more snaps a game. Remember them trying to start Street? I don't think 'hole' does their play very much justice.

That is 5 starters and a QB away from having starting positions. That is before you start thinking of depth and ST. We need players and a lot of them. We can draft 7 but counting on more than 2 or 3 in year 1 is craziness. We going to sign 10 players to field a competent 45 man active roster?

Nice thread. Always good to see others thoughts on the roster and what is needed. In a nice well thought out posts and constructive criticisms.

I already started my state of the team word documents for after the season is over, which I normally do.
Give my thoughts and ideas on what needs done, and what may. Or may not be done. But it is just my opinion.

This year so far, have one on Coaching and FO, Offense, Defense, Special Teams.

There is a lot that can be improved and needs addressed, but at the same time, may not be as much as we think either.
Fans will be down on players, but if the right player is brought in, then it may help those players people want gone. As they may not need to go in reality.

I don't dislike the idea of stacking the QB position. They should sign a guy and draft a guy ideally but I'm not sure anyone who will be willing to play backup in FA is going to be worth a flip. Fitzpatrick is a pipe dream with the way he's been playing the last few weeks. His rating is now 90. I don't see anyone else that doesn't play WCO.

We can draft 7 but counting on more than 2 or 3 in year 1 is craziness.

Considering we haven't drafted an above average starter after the third round since Scandrick in 2008, I would say counting on more than 2 or 3 ever is probably craziness, much less year 1.

@FuzzyLumpkins what needs do you think we'll be able to address in FA?

I started going over that.

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/

That is an excellent sortable tool.

Lots of secondary. Some WR and RB.

Issue with free agency now is we won't know the tenders until spring is rolling around. In order to gauge whether a potential free agent is available you have to look at the teams roster of FA. You can sort that too but that's quite a few names. Even then you only have an idea. Bears have FA and Forte might be available for example. Hard to gauge at this point.

I did find some interesting prospects. For example TN has some very good DT prospects coming up in Hill and Jergens. They cannot franchise them both. There is no doubt that help will be available for the secondary if you peruse that list.
