QB2 and QB3
Safety (probably 2)
At least 2 corners
2 one tech's ( or 1 depending on your opinion of terrel McClain).
MLB
at least 1 DE
speed WR
RB
Backup G/C

I hate Hayden at 60 snaps a game but I actually kinda like him at 20 or so in the backup role. He has had some good games and I think in a role where he can pysche himself out and overachieve then great. Problem is that even when he plays well he tends to wear down. He's got to get push with his lower body because he doesn't have the strength and leverage to disengage.

Letting him and McClain battle it out for the backup role could be functional. You want great but I'm so desperate for improvement here I will take what I can get.

I just think having a big meat pile in there could really catalyze things for where the line is at. It frees up DLaw, 98, or whoever else is on the line.

If the scheme calls for 4 people to rush the passer when they dropback then I want 4 such guys in at all times. Hayden cannot get off blocks so he is only useful in holding his position at the point of attack and not getting washed out by double teams on runs. That whole spiel about how he is a LB after he loses leverage makes me nauseated. It's not like he's out there creating fumbles either.

Who do you have in mind that isn't going to get walked all over by the Joneses and their circus?

Well Jerry being "comfortable" is by far his biggest qualification in a coach so I hold no vision of grandeur that we are destined to land a great coach but we have all seen beyond a shadow of a doubt that Garrett is not the answer. Maybe, just maybe, we can land someone who meets Jerry's main qualification yet is still a good coach. Possibly am assistant somewhere or college coach who wants to make the jump. Sean Payton would be my top choice if NO cuts him loose but I do not know if he would accept our unique situation.

I could so steal or transpose your words into lyrics...and write a song...a story.

I write and play music...but I love lyrics that I can steal to make a song.

Payton or Gruden. Sean has been here before and Chucky worked with Al Davis, he can work with Jerry.

And yes, I am completely dreaming. But hey, tis the season...

I like Payton. Gruden seems like a cross move that could just as easily train wreck.

Gruden turned Rich Gannon into a Pro Bowler. I like either of these guys picking and developing Romo's replacement better than just about anyone, and especially Garrett and Co.

Sure in 1995. Kiffin was a great coach back then too. He's an unknown to me beyond what I see on TV.

And Parcells was a great coach throughout his career. What Kiffin was or is now has nothing to do with Gruden.

That said I doubt there is a TV analyst anywhere who spends as much time watching film as Gruden. I think he is still in touch with the modern game, unlike Kiffin who was busy failing in college ball for years before we tried to resurrect him.

And most of all he's not on on the job training project like the current HC.

My point was that time off from the NFL matters particularly that much time. How else are we supposed to evaluate except to look to the past for examples. Kiffin was a very good coach that took time off and came back and tanked. There are plenty of examples of retreads failing in all walks of life.

Parcells was off for two years. Gruden hasn't coached going on 7. Not quite the same thing.

I don't hate the idea. You can tell from watching the game with him on the TV that he has intuition and keeps up with the game. Like I said it just seems a cross move.

I don't think Garrett is as bad as you do. His record is still slightly above average. Gruden could go either way. I see it as a wash.

This team does have talent. Our secondary needs work and so does the QB position. As well as the OC position. Our oline and dline both look stacked imo. That's a good foundation. I would try to bring Hardy back long term.

RB isn't a big need. The bigger issue at RB is that I don't trust McFadden to stay healthy. He really hasn't been that bad this season, especially in the last 6 games.

We need to find a QB of the future. Romo is officially injury prone. We can find a QB of the future and use them as a potential backup QB.

Need to keep the RT play in check. Romo performs best when the RT is good. Have to figure out what we want to do with Leary in that regard. Have him at guard and move Collins or Martin to tackle? Or just keep Collins and Martin at guard, hope Free can play for serviceable for another year and Green becomes the successor.

Defense needs a MIKE, corners and safeties. Could use a 1-tech backup with T. McClain coming back.

I don't have the inclination for an exhaustive analysis but from time to time I like the rank the roster position by position starters and major contributors. The notion here is what to do moving forward not to dwell on what went wrong so if players are expected back next year they are listed.

Offense

QB1 Romo
OC Frederick
LOT Smith
ROG Martin
TE1 Witten
WR1 Bryant
LOG Collins
WR3 Beasley
WR2 TWill
RB1 DMC
WR4 Whitehead
RB2 Turbin
FB Clutts
TE2 Escobar
TE3 Hanna
ROT Free
SwingOT: Green
WR5 Street
QB2 Cassel

We need to upgrade in order: QB2, RB1, WR2, and backup linemen. Green and Lucky need more playing time tonight. If you have 3 RB active start giving other guys carries too.

Defense

WLB Lee
CB1 Scandrick
CB2 Jones
LDE DLaw
UT1 Crawford
RDE Gregory
UT2 Crawford
UT3 Irvin
CB3 Carr
SS Church
MLB Hitchens
LB Smith
LB WIlson
SS Wilcox
Slot Mitchell

Huge state of flux at LB and the secondary. If Claiborne is retained and Carr takes a pay cut that may be best case and we can move the rookie to FS. Carr and Claiborne both leave then we are still in dire need of at least one corner and then either a S or CB just to play nickel and base.

Needs: Gaping holes: NT, SAM, FS Need depth: DE LB

So overall we have gaping holes at FS NT RB1 QB2 SAM. WR2 maybe
we need better depth at WR DE LB OL RB secondary

This team is nowhere close.

As far as WR2 I really like Butler that kid needs more playing time as well.

NFL leading rushers since week 7
Martin TB 900
Peterson Min 819
McFadden Dal 769
Gurley StL 709
Stewart Car 691

And no, I don't trust him to stay healthy either.

Secondary, WR, RB, LB, DE all needs . Future QB is too.

We can't afford to miss this year. We need a perfect offseason.

As for the draft. We have to go BPA.

Exactly, so much changes in the NFL year to year. It will be fairly easy to get this team where we need it to be next season, it's all about staying healthy which we did last season and did not this season.

Just like it took Jason 3 years of 8-8 to finally get to 12-4. We are closer to 8-8 than 12-4 with this current team. Sorry , we were better with Murray than we are with McFadden. Even when Romo was in this year, he didn't look as good as last year. Romo and Murray complemented each other very well. We are a better team when we run the ball 25+ times a game. Even with Tony hurt, our game plan has been to throw more this season which is ridiculous. Our play calling has been horrible and it hasn't helped any of our QB's this year.

I like your analysis, but in my opinion we're closer than you think.

Yeah I agree.

To me the two biggest reasons why we are where we are will be automatic fixes going into next season.

Romo will be back another year removed from back surgery and simply by pure dumb luck we should be much better in turover ratio so any discussion of improvement hss to start there.

Defensively there's no question Jerry is going after a big time safety in FA. Jones will absolutely move to safety so that's set. Scandrick and Mo will be okay. No mention of Hardy who I think has played himself out of a big contract and I think we retain him. Another year in the weight room with D Law and Gregory will be huge. We need some depth no question.

Offensively the line is really playing like last season and I think RB whoever it is wil be much more effective with Romo. I agree with Fuzzy we need a 2nd wide receiver.

Finally the draft - draft - draft.

Maybe it's just me but I think we're really close - really close.

We need 2 upgrades at 1-Tech
QB
FS
CB
MLB
DE - Maybe
RB
WR
RT- Maybe

Santa says that list is too long.....sounds like one year removed from a 12-4 season, we are in rebuilding mode, again.
Fire JG now.
