what? You're not making any sense. Drafting a Top 5 cb in the first round is now a "huge mistake"Use Your Illusion;2875716 said:Drafting a 25-year-old rookie CB was a huge mistake, but extending him with that huge contract was even worse. One of the biggest mistakes of Jerry's career. Ever since then he's gone completely downhill. Now he's 31 and can't stay healthy to save his life. If he's already hurt this early into training camp, why would anyone have faith that he can play a full season?

Newman was the main reason we could even play man to man towards the end of the season which again let us be more aggressive, had he been healthy all season Stewart might still have had a job

Worst decission was to trade Henry away. We should have given them Tnew instead (of course for more value). Let the injury bug hamper him one more season and we won't get alot for him anymore. Better trade them when they have worth on the market....
Tnew always seems to start his career "this" seasons or from "this" game on. Then there are alsways excuses why he couldn't play up to his potential. And potential and talent does he have. But his fans seem to forget that staying healthy in football is also a talent and a important one.

It wasn't a huge mistake though, as I'm sure you'd agree.jterrell;2875840 said:His point is a valid one that concerned me as well.
TNew was 2 to 3 years older then many draftees and 4 years older than Witten when they were each drafted.
TNew is now 31 years old and has been to 1 Pro Bowl.
He has been a solid player but a top 5 pick is supposed to be a backbone of the team. I preferred Terrell Suggs even with his mediocre 40 time because pass rush skill translates to the NFL. I also like Byron Leftwich tho so as always, the draft is a crap shoot.
All that said TNew was generally regarded the best overall player in that draft. He was ranked first by the majority of the teams so taking him at 5 even at 25 years old was understandable.
And as was stated I think the age was a major concern on that contract extension. If TNew isn't healthier for the remainder of his career than he has been the last 2 years that contract become an albatross; or we get scared and gamble he's done by trying to jettison him in the uncapped year.
Newman is a heck of a good player but his age and health make him a very good, very scary player.

jterrell;2875899 said:Call me when Newman has played 14 years....
Also please do fact check before posting....
Owens has played and probably sulked through 16 games 6 times in his career. Including 2 of the last 3 which all occurred in Dallas.
Beyond that T.O. played in 14 or more games every year but 1, when he had a broken leg which he recovered from in time to play in the Super Bowl.
Newman has missed 9 games in two years with about 5 other games where he played poorly due to injury. Even more than that he had an issue in previous years where he was banged up and started getting pass interference calls racked up on his like they were on special at KMart. Newman's injuries are an issue because his play is so markedly effected by them. He is in a position where you can't hide.

Doomsday101;2875904 said:I agree Newman being hurt has been a problem but the fact is players get hurt playing football I wish that was not the case but it happens. Newman has not been injury prone he has missed time over the last 2 years and because we had nothing behind him it hurt. That is not a reason to claim a player as injury prone or that some how it is a given he will get injured and miss time this season. He very well could but no more or less than other starting players around the league.

jterrell;2875914 said:I think the issue is the injuries TNew has had.
They are nagging things like this groin, or a high ankle sprain. Torn ACL, ok, you sit a year and come back stronger... the groin you play through it but never really heals and your play looks like bumpkus.
Also its an age thing. If T.O. had missed 9 games over the last 2 years he may very well be unemployed right now. But 31 at CB with a huge salary... ignore that is Newman and just weigh that versus a guy we could trade for like say Champ Bailey.
I tend to lump Romo and TNew together. They are key guys who need to play at a higher level all year this year. They get paid like superstars but are clearly less consistent than Witten/Ware.
