Not breaking news or anything, but I don't think I would feel comfortable giving TNew major bank after his 30th bday. I think there is a serious chance the Cowboys let him walk when his rookie contract is up, given his age.

He was a 25 year old rookie. Like people have said, he doesn't have a lot of mileage on him. He can still be a good corner for 5-6 years.

Newman redshirted his first year and then played all four years. He was 19 when he graduated from high school and turned 20 while he was redshirted.

My truck is a 1997 but it only has 70,000 miles on it.

Should I get rid of it?

Yes, you need a 2007 Hummer, with 1 mile for every gallon

30 doesn't seem to be a big number for CBs, but around 34 or so things begin to change. However, I don't buy the argument that he doesn't have a lot of mileage and so he will play longer than other CBs because no CB has lots of "mileage." The position isn't like running back where your body gets punished every play. Covering receivers, no matter how physical they might be, will not shorten your career.

You should if your monthly payments all of a sudden surpass the price of a 2007 with half the miles.

Athletes body do degrade as they get older, regardless of "tread." I just don't think its prudent to give a giant, long term contract to a 30+ year old that isn't a) a pro bowl QB b) a generational player c) freak athlete. I don't believe TNEW is any of these.

Don't get me wrong, I love the guy (my AIM screen name is terencenewmanfan). I just don't like his age, or his future price tag.

Hell yeah if you gonna pay 50 million to keep it running.

I truly believe that Jerry should be smart about this and take 2 corners within the first 3 picks. Just to have a little leverage and to all the guys that say that Newman only has a few miles on his tires due to him starting late could you give some examples of Corners in their 30s playing shut down ball because thats what we will be paying him. I mean Besides Darrell Green what corners have played shutdown ball after the age of 30? Thanks in advance.

We're lucky to have two guys on defense that improve each and every year, Newman and Ware are arguably two of the best at their positions in this game. And to say we don't draft well...

Uhhhhh.....................Newman is a Pro Bowl player (edit: I just re-read you said Pro Bowl QB. My bad). Freak athlete? Some could argue both for and against.

My question is this: How many TDs does Newman give up on average every
year? Now to the next question: Are you willing to downgrade a unit that everyone is already up in arms about being our biggest defensive weakness? Not me. You pay the guy his money and draft for the future. We shouldn't be drafting to replace Newman (our only REAL sure thing in the defensive secondary) we should be drafting to replace Henry with a cheaper contract that allows us to keep a guy like Newman. Green played well into his 30s. Ditto for Sanders, Woodson (Rod), Lott. I think Newman is that type of player. I could be wrong, but I'd be willing to gamble the contract on him and draft for Henry's cheaper replacement.

But that's where you are wrong -- you wouldn't be paying 50 million to keep it running -- let's say T-new gets a 5 year 50 mill deal. Like most deals, it is realistically a THREE year deal with extra years at the end balancing out the bonus and allowing his agent to pound his chest about what a great deal he got his guy. Realistically that means we've got to keep him until he's 34 - you'd be make a legit 3 year - 30 mill-ish commitment -- that's what a top CB goes for.

Right now T-New is one of the top 10 CBs in the league -- you could draft a CB year after year in round 1 and never get that quality.

You pay Newman his money, the cap is gone in 2010 so it doesnt really matter anyways.

The Boyz will be the highest revenue team in the NFL by a wide margin once the new stadium opens. Throw in no cap (pretty obvious 9 teams will vote against it in Nov) and we can pay all our starters $10 mill per yr and not even think twice about it.

:)
