He was a 25 year old rookie. Like people have said, he doesn't have a lot of mileage on him. He can still be a good corner for 5-6 years.
we are not talking about the LB or RB position here. mileage doesnt matter when you play cornerback. players lose speed and their explosiveness at around 30, it doesnt matter how long you played prof. football. it happens to every player and it will happen to newman as well. he should be a very good starter for another 2 years maybe but after that he's gonna hit the wall and lose his speed. he will turn into another aaron glenn.

Or he can turn into Darrell Green.

Didn't want to do it. I felt I owed it to him.

Been on the two CB's in the first round bandwagon for months now.. Add SS in the later rounds.

Not breaking news or anything, but I don't think I would feel comfortable giving TNew major bank after his 30th bday. I think there is a serious chance the Cowboys let him walk when his rookie contract is up, given his age.
Whenever Jerry Jones gets bored, he logs on, creates anomymous users and posts stuff just to piss off fans. For the last time Jerry, it ain't funny. ******! It AIN'T funny!

maybe...

however, if he turns 30 in september, you're talking about him being a good CB up until his 36th birthday. how many CBs come to mind at that age?

I guess we shouldn't keep a top LT or WR who is over 30, either, should we? We can just draft another one here in a month or so and roll along.

After all, we all know that those players fall off the cliff once they hit that magical age of 30, right? And God forbid if they are, say, 33 or 34. There's no way anyone could play top football at that age.

He will its not even a worry unless he falls off the map this year.

If Roy Williams is in this secondary its a must to have him.

TNew will be resigned and he'll be just fine, and play at a high level, for the next 4 years. Then, when he's 34, Dallas will be able to dump out of the remainer of the deal if the guy is really starting to fall off.

This idea that he's suddenly going to go from a top 10 (and IMO he's a top 5-6) corner to a "let's let him walk cause he's old and slow" overnight cause he turned 30 is beyond stupid.

You should never waste a top 5 pick on an overaged player like Newman in the first place.

But I have no doubt Jerry is getting ready to back up the bank truck to a 30 year old player who will be in serious decline in a couple of years.

The guy is just barely coming into his max potential, letting him "walk" would be a mistake.

Its all about the price tag guys. I am not saying let him walk because he is 30. I am saying we should let him walk if he wants to be the highest paid corner in the league. Smart organizations don't give 30+ year old players those kind of contracts, and neither should the Cowboys.

Now, I am also not saying that there aren't any exceptions to the rules (as I have already stated).

Furthermore, look at the secondaries of the Giants, Colts, Patriots, and Steelers - none of those teams have players in their secondaries with contracts like TNew's next one. However, they do have pressure players that make money like Ware will make. Tells you something about how winning organizations allocate assets.
