You should never waste a top 5 pick on an overaged player like Newman in the first place.

But I have no doubt Jerry is getting ready to back up the bank truck to a 30 year old player who will be in serious decline in a couple of years.

Are you available for birthday parties?

Its all about the price tag guys. I am not saying let him walk because he is 30. I am saying we should let him walk if he wants to be the highest paid corner in the league. Smart organizations don't give 30+ year old players those kind of contracts, and neither should the Cowboys.

Now, I am also not saying that there aren't any exceptions to the rules (as I have already stated).

Furthermore, look at the secondaries of the Giants, Colts, Patriots, and Steelers - none of those teams have players in their secondaries with contracts like TNew's next one. However, they do have pressure players that make money like Ware will make. Tells you something about how winning organizations allocate assets.

Educan you are a silly man......

Bailey is actually 29. 3 months older than Newman.

While I think Newman will be good for several more years I don't really understand the notion that he is "younger" than his age. Just because he was late getting into the pro league doesn't mean he has less wear and tear. That almost makes it sound like he was at home on the couch for 5 years. He has still been playing football the whole time. He will be a fine player for awhile longer but he isn't exactly as fresh as a 25 year old.

My truck is a 1997 but it only has 70,000 miles on it.

Should I get rid of it?

My truck is a 1995 with 69,000 miles.

You should if your monthly payments all of a sudden surpass the price of a 2007 with half the miles.

Athletes body do degrade as they get older, regardless of "tread." I just don't think its prudent to give a giant, long term contract to a 30+ year old that isn't a) a pro bowl QB b) a generational player c) freak athlete. I don't believe TNEW is any of these.

Don't get me wrong, I love the guy (my AIM screen name is terencenewmanfan). I just don't like his age, or his future price tag.

It seems to me, this is a question of risk/reward where the risk is heavily enhanced by his age.

If he continues to perform at a high level and doesn't get injured for 5 years, then it's a no brainer. On the other hand, as we all get older our bodies dont heal as fast, so an injury to him could be crushing because the bonus/cap hit would prevent us from making other moves.

If a new contract was signed after 08, he would be 31 when the new contract kicks in.

I'd love to hear someone tell me how many corners perform at a high level at age 31 and beyond.

Regardless of how much we all love this guy, Jerry & co have a tough decision with this guy next year. We also have to worry about Ware and that contract is going to be ridiculous.

Maybe we should hope for the uncapped year so we can keep all our guys and grab a few free agents

Or he can turn into Darrell Green.

Risk/reward....

If 1 in 20 corners turn into D Green (and I personal bet the odds are a lot larger, like 1 in 100) then how can you risk a big bonus and contract on a position that historically falls off at the age of 30 and beyond?

I dont know the true stats so if 50% of all corners play at a high level until age 35, then that changes the analysis considerably.

The contract has to enable us to not get crushed by a cap hit if he gets injured or his skills fall of dramatically. Keep in mind that the new contract would go into effect when Newman is 31 years old, not 30.

I'm also highly wary of dolling out huge contracts to all but the very best, high character type guys because it's human nature to get fat, happy and comfortable once you get paid. Beyond the risk of injury and competitiveness is the risk of loss of desire and hunger to compete at a high level (see R Williams or B Favre for that matter-in no way comparing Favre to Roy).

Regardless of what happens, this is going to be a very tough decision and I sure hope Jerry & co know their stuff before they make a risky long term, cap crippling commitment. Jerrys lack of involvement in this years free agent pool gives me some comfort that maybe he has learned from his mistakes and has more faith in the personnel department.

IMHO, our future rises and falls in the PR department & draft and I want to be competitive long term, not just a few brief years.

I am not eduncan, nor do I know who that is.

I don't mind paying money to corners (my brother pointed out that the Giants wanted Hall, so that sort of debunks my hypothesis that smart teams don't pay up for CBs), I just feel its too risky to give a giant contract to a CB that will probably get worse over the life of the contract because of his age.

If Cowboys Brain Trust rate Terence Newman and Nmadi as being of the same caliber, why not give the same contract to the corner that is three years younger?

Not breaking news or anything, but I don't think I would feel comfortable giving TNew major bank after his 30th bday. I think there is a serious chance the Cowboys let him walk when his rookie contract is up, given his age.
Let me guess, we need 2 CB's in the first now because Newman just got old and worn out over night? lol

b/c Newman is one of the very best at his position. T.O is in his mid-30's and im sure NONE of you would have an issue with him getting a 4 year deal knowing he'd get 2 years, 3 years max of it. Newman is younger, just hitting his prime and if we offered a 6 year deal i'd have NO ISSUE AT ALL. He'd get 3-4 years or so and then re-sign,retire, or move on.

Newman is EASILY one of our top players.

Romo
Witten
Ware
Barber
T.O
Newman

I dont think you could argue that any of those arent our top guys. I would have no issue with us extending any of them until they start to decline.

See folks, thats the wonder of NFL deals, they arent all guaranteed. Until the player declines, pay them. As soon as they do and they arent worth paying, then cut them.

How old was Darrell Green when he retired? TNew is a freak athlete who keeps himself in great shape. Has he shown any signs of slowing down? Yeah, let's allow our best CB to walk..... :lmao:

30 doesn't seem to be a big number for CBs, but around 34 or so things begin to change. However, I don't buy the argument that he doesn't have a lot of mileage and so he will play longer than other CBs because no CB has lots of "mileage." The position isn't like running back where your body gets punished every play. Covering receivers, no matter how physical they might be, will not shorten your career.

Hate to say it but I tend to agree. Isn't an athlete actually hitting their prime at his age not going backwards? There have been plenty of corners play at a high level into their mid 30's.
