Texans to interview Will McClay

So Dallas gives permission but Philly does not. Typical, but I believe in this case he is interviewing with them simply to get the financial numbers which Jerry has already agreed to match or beat. I can't see them giving the permission without this type of deal in place. I'm fairly confident he will be back. If he takes the job there, there are even bigger problems in Dallas than even the biggest pessimists here imagine.

As I mentioned in a previous thread last year on the radio he said he would not rule anything out but said how much he loves working for the Cowboys and how his kids are in middle school and love their schools and friends and that was very important to him. I think it was genuine but if someone offers him big $ who knows. I really want him to stay. We all know he does not have the final say but has a lot of input into draft picks and has brought back some much needed structure and discipline in the Cowboys drafting process.

You guys never cease to amaze me. I could break down all the personnel moves over the Will McClay years as the assistant to the assistant to the actual GM and show you it's not all that great but you'll still look to him like he's Ron Wolf on PEDs.

I can just imagine the hysteria if he does leave. Mourning a figment of your imagination.

What are we really losing if he goes? What is so great about the state of the team now as opposed to 10 years ago?

Only speaking for myself but I think he gives us hope for the future of the franchise. Jerry can't live forever (I think) and although he has spent 20+ years trying to prove to everyone that he is a "football guy" McClay actually is one. He has played, coached, scouted and has spent years paying his dues. He is also a workaholic who watches more tape than anyone in the building (I have heard this on different occasions and from different people, Spags, Eatman, Broadus, etc.).

He has given this franchise a scope and framework for how they go about the drafting process and has the scouts and coaches working together in a way not seen around here in a long time. Although he does not have final say (R. Gregory and J. Smith practically scream Gambler Jerry but of course no one will really know) I think he is the voice of reason. And that stability is much needed in a franchise that has far too often fell victim to an owner and GM that can be impulsive and short sided. When his kids finally take over, I think Stephen will be heavily involved but will put his ego aside and hire a GM. At least that is my hope, maybe I'm wrong.

Risen I am sure you are correct but if McClay leaves look at the alternative, either a yes man that will cave to Jerry, or new guy Jerry does not trust so Jerry makes the call, or they leave the position "vacant" and again it falls to Jerry.

McClay is the guy who puts together the draft board. I can assure you neither Jerry or Stephen would take that over should he go. It would be another actual scout in charge of that. So no, his position wouldn't be vacant. His title may be, but what he actually does wouldn't.

Is Lionel Vital still around? He'd probably be the new Will McClay. Get to know him. You'll be hearing great things about him shortly if this goes down.

This. The 15 draft has taken some of the shine off, but overall we’ve been one of the better drafting teams. I doubt there’s a GM that you can’t dissect and build a case against.

I like McClay because he’s not Lacewell. Is he the saviour? Probably not. Is he the enemy? No. He keeps the enemy from himself it seems

I agree. I have no problem praising or being critical of a draft pick. Ozzie Newsome is one of the most respected GM's in the league and has been widely praised for his drafts. But if you go back the last 5 years or so and look at the Ravens drafts they have missed on more picks than I can remember in a long time. But before then he had a well earned rep for his drafts. The Cowboys draft from 1994-2002 were about the worst in the league IMO. Then as soon as Parcels left and Wade Phillips was hired our drafts sucked again. The team Wade took over was stocked with young good talent. The horrendous 2009 draft only compares to the 1995 draft as equally cringe worthy. I do not want a Larry Lacewell anywhere near the Jones family on draft day.

Jerry will pay him more than the Texans can. Question is, does McClay value money or the title of GM more?

bigger question is which team does he think arrow is pointing up on.

I just fon’t see him leaving. This could be a ploy to remind JJ of what could happen one day, and to make certain he is not taken for granted. His day as a GM is coming but not now, IMO. His rep. took a hit this year like the rest of our “front office”.

Right, is he a man or a mouse? Unlike Garrett, he should have some good opportunities to work outside Jerry's fun house.

Can he just sign on with houston or deos Jerry have to release him from his contract?
