Texas A&M TE Jalen Wydermyer

Agreed, and plenty fall into that category....I just don't want him at any salary.

I think guys with his skillset are easy to find

He’s definitely a fourth round talent. A very good pass catcher that doesn’t block well. On the plus side, he has better mobility and change of direction than ‘straight-line’ Jarwin has. But like Jarwin, you can’t ask him to do much in the blocking department.

I’m not paying big money for a guy that does half the job well. Let someone else do that and give me my comp pick.

But his production in the passing game will be missed and I have little patience for homers trying to tell themselves or me that losing Schultz means nothing.

The same crap every year. First it’s denial and claims that ‘we can keep anyone we want’. Then it’s damage control and bad mouthing or minimizing the players we lost with ‘he wasn’t that good anyway’.

Schultz isn’t worth the $10-$12 million a year he’ll likely get paid, but our passing game will miss him.

100%

Although, I’d be willing to pay Schultz $7-8M per year. That said, the way we use tight end is more of an outlet rather than a featured position. If we continue with the same modus operandi then we could easily plug-in a mid-rounder and be successful.
If they pay him that....he has to play, and our run game will continue to struggle. Elliott will need to play more, etc...and they really really need to get a much better running game going.

A huge part of fixing this offense, and/or trying to work around the limitations of Prescott, is fixing the run game. A huge part of fixing the run game is getting a TE or two that aren't awful at blocking.

I'm just not fooled by catch stats. How many of those were dump offs? McKeon can't do that? Sure he can.

Paying Schultz like 6 million and it being at the expense of losing, say....Brown or Kearse? Nah. There won't be a noticeable drop to McKeon.

But I would say they need to get themselves an eventual TE1 in this particular draft.

It's a deep one there and makes full sense when cap dollars are tight.

Now....Golson instead of DLaw.....Wilson instead of Cooper....McGovern for whoever.....much more worried about the drop-offs on those.

Been saying all along one of the top two picks will be offense, namely skill positiion ( i probably would not do this unless the value was too great to pass up) but a TE or somebody like Burks or Williamson would not shock me at all. Remember they have a 40 million dollar QB to prop up.

If we draft a TE in the 1st 2 rounds…I swear.
I disagree.
IMO, you have two positions that you can increase enough to literally raise the level of play for this team.
On offense that is the TE. Get a dynamic TE who can block and catch and you can raise the level of this offense making everyone jobs easier.
On defense that is the NT. Get a legit NT, who demands multiple blockers, and the middle runs are clogged, everyone else is manned up, and the LB's get to run free.

As much as everyone hates the TE position, Dallas isn't getting better at QB, RB, and they were very good at WR last year. Their OL was good but not great and can get better but not massively better. TE couldn't block and stopped drives.
Same thing with NT. They don't get sacks so teams don't seem to want them, but they increase the abilities of everyone else so dramatically.

I have no clue who Dallas will draft, and I know that busting on a high pick (Mo Claiborne) sets your team back. With that said, if you want to increase the overall talent of your team the most -- draft a NT and TE in the top 3 rounds and don't miss -- then utilize their talents.

I really don't know how I'd feel about Wydermeyer in the second. On one hand, I think he's a safe bet to be an NFL starter. On the other, I don't think he's got the potential to be a difference maker even at a low value position. He's a good athlete but not a great athlete and doesn't have any real standout attributes.

The comps I've seen for him are Jermaine Greshman and Marty B. Big bodied TEs who could catch OK, block OK, started a bunch of seasons in the league, but were they ever playmakers?

But then on the flip side, how many starting players do teams even find in the NFL draft? Can't be much more than 50 per season. If a legit starter is there at #56, do you pass on him? I don't know how to weigh that.

This is typical of Dallas. They let guys go and make it a priority to replace them. Follow that premise in this draft. DE, TE, WR. That’s what they will do

My thoughts exactly.

They have pinpointed where they wanted to go the last few drafts. Guys like Parsons and Lamb were BPA. But the 2nd and 3rd rounds have been pretty predictable

I’m not sure I have an issue with that approach. I’d much rather find a cheaper alternative in the draft than pay retail for a guy like Schultz.

I have a bigger issue with the “we like our guys” approach.

My main issue is you cannot go into the season with gaping holes at multiple positions and expect rookies to play multiple spots. If we lock up Gregory, Kearse, Watkins, Hooker on D, it shouldn't break the bank.

You can then focus the offseason / draft on finding a LG, TE and WR.

You just cannot expect to replace LG, WR, TE, RDE, LB, FS, SS all in one offseason with rookies.

Sure, a quality TE that can be a security blanket helps. I have a few issues with taking a TE so early this year:

- There isn't a "dynamic" TE in the class. Noone on the same planet as Pitts.
- Jarwin will be healthy and is a better blocker than Schultz
- You can have a similar talent in the 4th to anyone your thinking about drafting in the 2nd

there a big pattern there but do you really want to re-sign Shultz? he is slow and cant block worth a lick.

Love Shultz, but because of JG we can’t afford him because three Olineman make a fortune. Schultz is only going to get better. He’s no Kelce, but Kelce can’t block either just FYI.

I heard this afternoon that Jarwin just underwent surgery and may not be ready when the season starts. I think Wydermeyer is that TE that can be a security blanket, a deep threat, and block. I am pretty high on Ruckert as well, if you can't get Wydermeyer or McBride. Just depends on what and who falls.

Ruckert is my guy at TE. He grew up a huge Bills fan

I'd take Wydermeyer in the 2nd for sure, and maybe at the end of the 1st. BS on blocking issues. Maybe on motivation issues, but not on his ability to block. I have watched him for several years, and just HOPED Dallas had a shot at him.

He is a very good pass catching TE with great mobility. He can block, and will.

I guess we didn't learn our lesson when we took Martellus Bennett in the 2nd round......:banghead:

Seems all so familiar.....

We just continue to do the same things that failed in the past.....like over paying for a RB... Zeke/Barber....over paying for a bad QB.....So why not burn another 2nd rounder on a TE????
