So I'll start it off with a simple question. Apparently it's down to 4 guys, jimbo fisher, James Franklin, art briles and Charlie strong. So out of those 4 gentlemen, who do you prefer? Or if you're not a Texas fan, who do you think would make the best choice and why?

Frankly I like strong the best for no particular reason. I like him, franklin and briles a lot and think either would do a great job. I don't doubt jimbo's ability to coach but for some reason I don't like him for us. Thoughts?

From what I've heard, Fisher is the guy they like the best. I have to be honest, I don't know much about him other than he's the guy who followed Bowden and of course has a great team this year.

I'm not a Texas fan but I think Briles would be best. I think they'd almost instantly be dominating, and do it scoring 60 points a game. He's too good with the Xs and Os and he's a great recruiter of the state.

Frankly, I'm relieved they aren't going after Malzahn.

I've heard a few people say that Fisher would be the guy if Saban did not come to Texas. Same guys also said that if Saban decided to come to Texas, Fisher would be the next HC at Bama.

Fisher makes sense in a lot of ways. He coached under Saban and Les Miles at LSU. He is an offensive minded Coach, he's a former player, he's a guy who was hand picked by a Legend in Bobby Bowden, to replace Bowden at FSU.

He's an excellent recruiter and he has ties to a hotbed recruiting areas in both Florida and Louisiana.

What's more, he has wanted to come to the Big 12 for some time. Recall that he was one of the very vocal driving forces around FSU joining the Big 12. FSU's facilities, while improving, are not what Fisher believes to be adequate. A jump to Texas would be a very logical step for him.

He is not my first choice but he is a very good one IMO and probably the best option of the four named here. JMO.

On the other hand, Fisher did just sign an extension worth 4.1 Mil plus incentives in Dec. so there is that. He may decide to just stay at FSU, who knows?

interesting list. about what you'd expect from a search committee.
james franklin is the most mack brown of that group.
he'd likely do quite well but perhaps not truly elite.
could see a great 15 year run though.

of that group briles would be most likely to get them to NC games next few years.
he would bring his son back to texas and that kid is becoming a top recruiter.
no one would recruit better than UT with Briles in place.

Fisher might have best 10 year win total. Can recruit and knows defense as well as anyone.

strong... just not sure i'd hire a guy who hasnt been on major conference with major conference competition regularly.
But he has QBs and he has had major, major success.

According to reports, deal was actually done in Dec. but not signed till recently. He's from WV you know.

Yes...so is Saban.

Now if we could only lure some of these coaches back to WVU.

Charlie Strong is a dang good coach and would prolly be wise to take the job if offered because he's losing a lot of fire power at Louisville this winter. Franklins a great coach too, if you can pull in the recruiting classes he's pulled in at Vandy imagine what he'd do at Texas?

@kbohls: Texas source says Louisville's Charlie Strong has reached out to Longhorn staff to do homework, perhaps lay groundwork for new job. #perhaps

Hope this happens! I really like strong!

I know it will not happen but I'd take Shaw over anyone.

I've been watching all this Rose Bowl stuff for several days & that guy is a heck of a good coach.

He just has all the intangibles I'd want in a HC.

If Garrett doesn't get into the playoffs in 2014 he may get fired. Shaw should then be on the list for the Cowboys.

I bet Coach Shaw will get a lot of offers. I just have seen a few interviews & he's very articulate & I know he's done a fine job there. My first impression was that he just had what any program would want in a HC.

Shaw wont be leaving for another college job.

He built a pro style college team and will leave for a Pro job.
Wouldn't surprise me if that happened this off-season.
He's been around pro football most of his life via his Dad.

He's a Garrett clone as a football lifer but one who hot head coaching experience on the college level.

I think Briles is the guy.

Sounds like that's what the Letterman's Assoc guys want.

Lots of guys in play but my money would be on Briles as it was from day 1.
Always thought it was Saban with Briles as fallback option 1.

I am surprised Texas has actually shown interest in Briles. I thought it was a good move to at least look at him, but I didn't think the Texas contingent would actually do it. Now the talk seems to be heating up.

I think Shaw will be a NFL head coach in 2015.

Same here.

I listen to the radio show of one former major college and pro coach who still knows and talks to tons of active coaches and other people in the know, and he still thinks Fisher is their first choice. So that might ramp up after Monday.

Do any of you UT guys know why they haven't shown interest in Malzahn? Of course they always could be interested in someone whose name hasn't leaked.
