We had some pretty good comments on another thread that kinda lead to the subject of the Texas Music genre. It's a pretty diverse genre, it's got country, blues, rock, soul, zydeco, Tejano, rock, roots, folk and other influences. There's alot of great Texas music out there, but it seems radio airplay is few and far between. If anyone knows of good Texas Music radio stations, post them here as well.

KFAN 107.9 fm Texas Rebel Radio

Start it off with a very young Robert Earl Keen

Jerry Jeff Walker

Townes Van Zandt

Is a pretty darn good Texas Red Dirt station. ktex.com

Look at that top 20... all Texas modern country, all the time. Wade Bowen, Randy Rogers....

I find songs on here every now and then when I am bored and about 1 in 3 are really good imho.

Reckless Kelly has grown on me and I have been finding his stuff lately.

Huge Townes Van Zandt fan. I don't have a video to post, but check out Shinyribs if you get a chance. They've got a few members including the lead singer Kevin Russell who were previously with the Gourds. I don't know exactly how you'd label their music, but they're from Texas and fun to watch.

Good stuff! I always liked Reckless Kelly, their first CD, "Millican" is still one of my all time favorites.

Don't live in texas so I don't know about the current bands. Don't follow country so I don't know much from that Genre.

However if you are going to talk texas bands....you can't go wrong with Pantera when they were around or ZZ Top.

I will hang up and listen.

I remember The Gourds, they were legendary. I've seen a few vids of Shinyribs, but haven't seen them live.
Townes was the man! I was working at a club in Corpus and we had Townes booked, I was so excited. I had seen him live once before but never had the chance to meet him. Unfortunately, Townes passed away about 2 weeks before the gig, heartbreaking. Such a tragic figure with too many demons.

I believe the following metal bands were also from Texas. (not that I listen to all of them)
  • D.R.I.
  • Dangerous Toys
  • Drowning Pool
  • Rigor Mortis
  • King's X

Pantera was bad back in the day! ZZTop, especially their early albums were pure dirty Texas Blues. Used to have a friend that knew ZZTop from the early days and swears that they stole the idea for the song "La Grange" from him. One night while partying and jamming with them, he played a bass line he had been playing around with and not long after that they wrote "La Grange". I don't know how true that was, he was prone to exaggeration, but I do know they used to send him a Christmas card every year, so who knows.

Yep, I saw the Gourds at Luckenbach 2 years ago. When they played Gin & Juice for all those cowboys it was epic. Shinyribs will be playing Luckenbach this year on May 24th and Gruene Hall on May 30th. I plan on being at one of those two shows. Speaking of cowboys and Gruene Hall, I saw Ziggy Marley at Gruene Hall last October. Cowboys boot scootin to reggae was something to behold.

To be honest I'm not a country music fan at all! That said Townes Van Zandt would make my top 10 favorite artists of all time. He and Chris Christopherson are probably the two best country music writers of all time.

Having a Shiner at Gruene Hall should be required of all Texans.
That and floating the Guadalupe.

Absolutely! My wife and I used to float the Guadalpe every year and I've probably floated it 12-15 times. We have moved that trip to the Frio now since we have kids. It's a little more family friendly down there. I actually have a friend who put himself through school at Texas State (it was Southwest Texas then) as a fishing guide on the Guadalupe, Comal, and San Marcos Rivers. He went on to guide in Alaska and Patagonia for a while and has since moved back as a guide at Padre Island. I get together with him every year to surf fish for bull reds, sharks, and pompano.

I only drink Shiner.

thats actually pretty good stuff.
like near pantera level good.
not cowboys from hell good but you get the drift.

I refer to the style as Thump and Crunch. I'm a huge fan of it. It's my favorite style. Not necessarily Hippies, but Metallica, Pantera, Slayer (SoH and Seasons) and other bands like them.

btw, you should checkout 4ARM too.

I've never had a Shiner at Gruene Hall, but I've had plenty of Shiners in my day. Now I have floated the Guadalupe. Texas Hill Country is beautiful. That was back when Texas State was Southwest Texas where my brother attended.

I wasn't much into country music when I was young, but living growing up in New Braunfels made me appreciate it. Growing up, there wasn't much to do in the evenings, but girls liked to dance and go to the dance halls, so you learn to like it... lol I don't listen to much commercial/pop country, but I do love Texas country/roots music. I've spent my fair share of time at Gruene Hall. I don't live in New Braunfels anymore, but the last band I saw at the Hall was Todd Rundgren about a year ago.
