The Orioles hadn't been swept all season...until the met the manly Rangers in the Playoffs! SWEEP!

Rangers are 5-0 in the playoffs! Now we await what's next.
I was thinking Houston swept them in late August or September.

AL east got thumped 1,2,3, and out. They that bad?
Baseball isn't like football. There's a lot of luck involved and a matter of who's hot/who's not at just the right time. So Baseball playoffs are a crapshoot. Many seasons the best teams get knocked out. Just glad Rangers were hot at the right time.

You're right about the hot team peaking at the right time, that goes for mostly all sports, unless there's a super team developing a dynasty.

Nice seeing new faces in the mix. Good luck to your favorite team.

Streaky Rangers ride a hot streak to the ALCS.

I have a nasty feeling that the bubble will burst, though the extra rest should help the pitching staff.

Any news on Max Scherzer?

Agree, but it's particularly true about baseball.

In baseball if you win 60% of your games you are top tier, which reflects how many games a great team can lose just because of bad fortune.

A 110 mile rocket hit on a hop to the left fielder often results in a single. So is an an utterly mi**** squib that slowly dribbles up the third base line. A 395 yard drive caught against the wall is an out. So is a lazy pop-up to the second-baseman.

You've got names for these things: "Seeing-eyes-groundball," (slow ground ball that luckily finds a gap between fielders) "Texas Leager" (lucky bloop), etc

I heard he's likely to be on the roster for the next round, so it sounds like they'll try to use him in some capacity. How? As his customary starter role...or in the pen? I've got not idea.

Why is a ball that spins excessively described as having a lot of "English"?

Is that implying that the English are tricky and deceptive?

Great question! LOL. Maybe?

Just a guess: That verbiage probably pre-dates baseball. Might have started with billiards. I'd guess it might have started when the US wasn't on friendly terms with the British empire. Then again: in billiards "English" spin might have been high praise for intelligent play.

I've not googled any of this and am likely embarrassingly amiss. I might be curious enough to research it this weekend.

We Americans currently love the British almost more than our own... so cheers.

(As an aside...no folk in the world inject more marketing spin and ideological spin on our messages than we Americans. Not a pleasant trait.)
