That song that grabbed you and wouldn't let go

I have always loved music but have been especially fascinated by a song that grabs you the first time you hear it and you just have to hear it again. The alarm goes off in your head as if this is just what you've been waiting for without knowing it.

Some songs have such a pronounced effect that you can recall where you were and what you were doing the first time you heard it.

I had two such songs affect me like that the first time I heard them but it wasn't until 1968 I heard the first one and the following year heard the second one. What makes this so unusual is that I was doing the very same thing when I heard both songs, making daytime love to my bride I'd married in 1968 and so strong was the effect that I stopped because my ears had been commandeered and I was no longer in control. Not to worry, I did regain control and achieve my husbandly duty.

This song became one of our official "Our Songs". Our first was "You're the One" by The Vogues but I cannot bring myself to listen to that.
 
I've been giving this thread a lot of thought while listening to the selections posted here.

As much as i have enjoyed music throughout my life i find myself struggling to find any songs that pulled at me in the way that Coach described in his OP.

I think there was a vein (perhaps a large one) of selfishness and wildness in my youth that didn't allow for the introspection and understanding of the special moments and experiences in my life that should have translated into associations with certain music.

A loss certainly.

Now that i'm older I've entered a new phase and i'm constantly discovering music that leads to a nostalgia and yearning for what i may have missed.

Cool idea for a thread.

There are also instrumentals that do that to me and cause me to wonder 'why have those notes not been arranged like that before to evoke such emotion'?




And to this day, I cannot listen to this without tears coming into my eyes and I do not know why? That melody line just does it to me.
 
Years ago I was working for a large banks as a software development manager. One guy on my team was always whistling of humming a song from the Wizard of OZ and it used to drive me absolutely crazy! One day I yelled at him, "Danny, stop!" He told me he got the song is his head and couldn't get rid of it. I understood but it still drove me crazy. Then I noticed one day he stopped. But now I had that damn song in my head and I couldn't get rid of it! Sometimes karma is a *****!

Dave Barry said in order to rid yourself of a tune, you must infect someone else with it. But that has drawbacks when that song is "Easter Parade". I had that in my head and deliberated over whether to stay infected and let it die out or actually hum or sing it in hopes of infecting someone else. Didn't help that it wasn't even Easter so I decided to hang with it rather than supply more ammo for the men with nets.

instantly became his show-stopper.
this performance from '73 might be his best performance of any song.
